"tobio, can you wait for me a bit? let's take the subway together," miwa says, finishing putting the dishes in the sink. she tightens her grip on her crutch, limping toward the bathroom. "I'll wash the dishes later."
tobio clicks his tongue, letting out a sharp 'tch!' . "no. you'll make me late."
"c'mon. I'll just brush my teeth, and I'll be right out."
"no."
"you always get to school early. it wouldn't fucking hurt to arrive on time to keep me company."
"it would hurt," he taunts back. "it would hurt me the peace of an empty subway. it would hurt me a couple of math exercises. it—"
"then go fuck yourself!" miwa yells from the other side of the house, her voice a little garbled. she probably still had a toothbrush in her mouth, and just the thought of foam flying everywhere is enough to make kageyama snort. "i hope you fall into a manhole on the way."
kageyama peeks through the bathroom door and flips her off, running away before his sister can do anything. he slams the door shut and leaves the apartment, entering the elevator. before exiting, he waits a few minutes and presses all the buttons just to spite his sister.
but when he's about to head to school, he halts. guilt floods his lungs and chains his feet, and he can't take more than two steps out of the house.
miwa wasn't... always as pathetic as he is now.
when we're kids, it's normal to idolize older people or authority figures. be it relatives, teachers, or even fictional things like cartoon characters or superheroes. we need something to rely on, role models to feel safe. often this devotion mixes with the desire to become what you love most — tobio had some pretty embarrassing videos of himself dressed as batman, smiling like an idiot and flapping his cloth wings all around.
but after superheroes lost their shine and he discovered that the tooth fairy didn't exist — shame on his dad for having footsteps as heavy as an elephant —, he built a pedestal for miwa.
