Lena couldn't shake off the feeling that Max was hiding something. His reaction to the newspaper clipping had left her uneasy.

One evening, as they walked along the lake, Lena confronted Max.

"Tell me about your parents," Lena said, her voice firm but gentle.

Max's expression darkened. "What's there to say?"

Lena's eyes locked onto his. "The truth."

Max sighed, his shoulders sagging.

"They were murdered," Max said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I was 17. The police never caught the killer."

Lena's heart ached for Max. She couldn't imagine the pain and trauma he must have endured.

As they continued walking, Lena noticed a figure watching them from the shadows.

"Max, who's that?" Lena asked, her voice trembling.

Max's eyes narrowed.

"I don't know," Max said, his voice low and menacing. "But I'll take care of it."

As they quickened their pace, Lena felt the shadows closing in. The figure kept pace with them, always lurking just out of sight.

Suddenly, Max's phone rang, shrill in the evening air.

"Answer it," a raspy voice said.

Max's eyes widened.

"Lena, run," Max whispered.

Lena's heart racing, she grabbed Max's hand, and they sprinted through the darkness.

They finally reached Max's apartment, gasping for breath.

"What's going on?" Lena demanded.

Max's face was pale.

"I don't know," Max admitted. "But I think someone's been watching us."

Lena's fear turned to anger.

"We need to go to the police."

Max hesitated.

"I've already tried," Max said. "They don't believe me."

Lena's determination hardened.

"I'll make them listen."

As they hugged, Lena felt a resolve she hadn't known she possessed.
