Lena's mind reeled as Emily rushed to the crime scene. Max's grip on her hand tightened.

"What does this mean?" Lena asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Max's eyes were haunted.

"I don't know, but I think it's connected to my parents' murder."

Emily's team was processing the scene when they arrived. A young woman, mid-twenties, lay lifeless on the ground. The victim's eyes were frozen in a permanent stare, sending shivers down Lena's spine.

Lena gasped, covering her mouth.

"Oh my god."

"Do you recognize her?" Emily asked Max.

Max shook his head, his face pale.

As Emily began questioning witnesses, Lena noticed a figure lurking at the edge of the crowd. The figure was partially hidden by a tree, but Lena caught a glimpse of piercing green eyes.

"Max, look!" Lena whispered, tugging his arm.

The figure vanished into the darkness.

"Who was that?" Max demanded, scanning the area.

Lena described the figure, and Max's expression darkened.

"I'll find out," Max vowed.

Emily approached them, her expression grim.

"The victim's name is Sarah Johnson," Emily said. "She was investigating your parents' case, Max."

Lena's eyes widened.

"What?" Max exclaimed.

Sarah's phone records revealed a shocking truth: she had been in contact with Max's publisher, Jameson & Co.

"Your book deal," Lena said, pieces falling into place. "It's connected, isn't it?"

Max's eyes narrowed.

"I'll take care of it."

As they left the crime scene, Lena felt the web of deceit tightening around them. The city's darkness seemed to close in, casting long shadows.

Back at Emily's office, they pored over Sarah's research. The young journalist had uncovered disturbing connections between Jameson & Co. and several cold cases.

"This goes deeper than we thought," Emily said, her voice low.

Lena's mind reeled.

"What's the motive?" Lena asked.

Max's face twisted.

"My book. They want to silence me."

Emily's eyes locked onto Max.

"We'll protect you."

But Lena knew the danger was far from over. The green-eyed figure lingered in her mind, a constant threat.

As night fell, Max and Lena returned to his apartment, surrounded by shadows.

"I should have told you," Max said, his voice barely above a whisper. "About my parents, about everything."

Lena wrapped her arms around him.

"You're telling me now."

Max's eyes searched hers.

"Will you stay with me?" Max asked, vulnerability etched on his face.

Lena's heart swelled.

"Forever."

But as they held each other, Lena couldn't shake off the feeling that they were being watched. The green-eyed figure lurked in the darkness, waiting.
