Pallet Town was nothing more than a small town on a hill. The town was small and nothing really happened there. A town like this should be easily forgotten. But everyone in Kanto knows what Pallet Town is. Trainers of the last decades came here, a pilgrimage to start their career as a Pokémon trainer! Of course they do, the head professor is seated in Pallet Town, he is the one giving out the starter Pokémon. You have to step into Pallet if you want to get somewhere as a trainer.

And because Professor Samuel Oak is here, his grandson Gary Oak is also in Pallet Town. Being the grandson of the renowned Professor must be great. Gary thinks so, so his relation gave him a second hand ego. An ego showing itself by bullying the other kids of Pallet. Not that Pallet has many kids, most of the population of Pallet is pretty old, actually. Well, Gary bullies the kids of Pallet, even the ones he calls his friend. Six year old's have a weird logic.

So it happened one day, Gary and Ash, as well as two girls, a pair of twins called Green and Yellow, were playing on Professor Oak's ranch. Gary was bragging that in four years, when they start their journey, he will come out as the best of them and beat the reigning champion. "Whoever that will be.", Green said. The actual champion is old as dirt. Older than Gary's grandpa. It is just a question of time when he retires. Or gets beaten. But after being champion for three decades, no one thinks that happens soon.

Gary was approaching an angry Arcanine, proclaiming he will capture one and win the league with it. The Arcanine he was bothering was one his grandfather warned him a lot to leave alone. But Gary didn't listen as he thought he was invincible. But the Arcanine did snap. He barked and growled, scaring the girls into running away. The remaining boys were frozen in fear. Gary tried to calm it down, he watched his Gramps doing so, but his attempts made it only worse. The Arcanine spit fire at them, both ran as well.

The Arcanine Ran after the yelling boys, and then charged up a Hyper Beam. Gary managed to dodge, but his 'friend' Ash was hit. Gary saw this and ran to the lab, yelling for his grandpa. Arriving there, he saw a second Pokémon was with Ash, one he never saw. This thing was tall and quadruple. It was white and had a golden hoop round it's body. The head had a long wave protruding from it. His grandpa came out and recalled the Arcanine into it's Pokeball.

"What the heck happened Gary? Didn't I tell you to leave the old Arcanine alone?", his grandfather asked angrily.

"Ash! Arcanine hit Ash!" Gary dragged the old man to Ash. Professor Oak then called an ambulance.

Ash woke up in a hospital room. Sitting around his bed was his mother Delia, Professor Oak and Gary, who didn't look at him. But his father Farron was nowhere to see. Delia was the first to notice that he woke up. She hugged him, albeit carefully, and said happily, "My baby! You're awake!"

"Mm, what happened?", Ash asked slightly tired and slightly in pain. All in all, he felt weird.

"Despite my warnings, Gary irritated my Arcanine, he snapped and attacked you. You... well...", Professor Oak explained. "I still need to come up with a matching punishment for Gary." Gary was still not looking at Ash, despite that he woke up. Ash could sense shame radiating from Gary, which surprised Ash. But he could also sense sadness and happiness radiating from his mother, and anger and relieve from the professor.

"Mm, where is dad?", he then asked. He saw his mom freezing. Her sadness got stronger, he could feel it. But he could also feel that some anger sparked.

"Well, you see... you were, um, dead for a few minutes.", Delia explained, unsure if she should tel her six year old son that he was dead for a bit, "Before the doctors could bring you back, your father just left. He walked out of the room, out of the hospital. And out of our lives. When I was told you're alive again, I returned home to rest, where I saw that Farron packed his stuff and just left." Ash then heard the professor mutter a few not so nice words about his father, including 'coward' and 'irresponsible idiot'.

Ash's mind got blank. His father just left? But Farron loves them! Why would he ju8st leave? He had to ask, "Will dad come back?"

"I am sorry, but I don't think so.", his mother answered.

"There is something else, Ash.", the professor said.

Delia took a mirror out of her purse and gave it to Ash, "Take a look at yourself, sweetie."

Ash took the mirror. He expected burn marks or similar. But looking into the mirror, he nearly dropped the mirror in surprise. Not that it would have shattered, it would just have landed on his bed. He didn't expect for his hair to be white. It looked cool in a way.

"Woah, why is my hair white?", he asked, slight excitement lacing his voice.

Delia was relieved Ash wasn't bothered by the hair. She answered her son's question, "No one knows. It just started to turn white while the doctors tried to save you."

"It looks cool.", he said happily.

It had been a week since Ash returned form the dead and Farron Ketchum hit the road. His hair was still white like snow. Delia had been slowly getting rid of any clue that Farron lived there, one picture she replaced a picture with her and Ash with his new hair color. She also researched if she can divorce the runaway without him being there. Ash stayed a lot in his room, as he was supposed to rest. He could sense his mother's feelings about Farron, which just accelerated his own feelings about his dad. Professor Oak was still trying to figure out a matching punishment for his grandson.

Despite being attacked by the Arcanine, Ash wasn't feeling anything different about Pokémon. He still requested to to see the Pokémon on the professor's ranch, which Delia wasn't happy with. So Oak let him there, but he was accompanied by an assistant of his, a compromise he made with Delia. Not only is Gary simply grounded, he just doesn't trust Gary with his Pokémon anymore. There Ash saw Green and Yellow.

Yellow ran up to him and said, "Gary told us your hair is white now! It looks like cotton!"

"I know." His mom gave him a new nick name, 'Cotton Candy'.

"Hey, look!", Green said, pointing to a bunch of Gastly and Misdreavus. The swarm of ghosts came closer, before they floated around Ash. One even cuddled with Ash. "Oh! They like you. Creepy. But cool!" And with that, Ash's appreciation for ghost types started. It would take a while before it became a love for ghost types, though

"Um, Ash..."

The trio saw Gary stepping out of the lab.

"Aren't you grounded?", Yellow asked.

"Yes, but I wanted to apologize to Ash, so Gramps let me out.", Gary explained. "Ash, I-I want to apologize for getting you nearly dead with my stupidity. And potentially being the reason why your dad left – at least Gramps said so – and I... you see..."

"Did the professor demand that you apologize?", Green asked.

"No, Gramps said a forced apology would mean nothing, it was my idea to apologize.", Gary answered. "Well, Ash, you probably noted your mom is more strict and protective?"

"Yes, she doesn't want that I live like dad. Well, die fully.", Ash said.

"I overheard her telling Gramps she won't let you go on a journey in four years.", Gary revealed, "So Gramps decided I am also only allowed when Delia lets you."

"Looks like you won't be the very best in four years, Gary.", Yellow mocked him. "Now, Ash, do you accept Gary's apology?"

"Would you?", her sister chimed in.

"No."

"I forgive Gary. I think" - more like 'I can sense' - "Gary is sincere and means it.", Ash answered, surprising the girls. And even Gary.
