As night fell over the Mikaelson compound, Caroline felt a mix of anticipation and anxiety. The plan was set; they would confront Lucien tomorrow. She stood on the balcony, staring out at the darkened city, the lights twinkling like stars scattered across the landscape. Klaus joined her, his presence a comforting weight beside her.
“Are you ready for this?” he asked, his voice low and serious as he leaned against the railing next to her.
Caroline turned to him, meeting his gaze. “I’m ready. But I’m more worried about you. Lucien will come for you, Klaus, and I know he’ll use me to get to you.”
Klaus’s expression hardened at the thought. “He underestimates you, Caroline. That’s his mistake. You’ve already proven you can stand your ground.”
She smiled softly, warmth spreading through her at his faith in her. “I won’t let him take me again. I won’t be his pawn.”
Klaus regarded her with admiration, the fierce protectiveness in his eyes deepening. “I want you to promise me something,” he said, his tone serious.
“What is it?”
“If things get out of hand, if I’m not able to keep you safe—”
“Don’t say that,” Caroline interrupted, her voice rising slightly in panic. “You will keep me safe. You always do.”
He took her hands in his, his grip firm yet gentle. “Promise me that if it comes to it, you will run. You won’t hesitate.”
Caroline felt a knot form in her stomach. “I can’t just abandon you. We’re in this together.”
Klaus leaned closer, their foreheads nearly touching, his voice lowering to a whisper. “I won’t let you get hurt again, Caroline. Not after what Lucien did. You’re worth more than this fight.”
Her heart raced, a mix of emotions swirling within her. In that moment, she could feel the weight of their connection, the love and trust binding them together, solidifying her resolve. “I promise, but only if you promise to do the same. If it gets too dangerous, you need to protect yourself, Klaus.”
He sighed, frustration flickering across his face. “You make this far too difficult, love.”
“But you love me for it, don’t you?” she teased, a smile breaking through the tension.
Klaus chuckled, the warmth of his laughter easing the weight of the situation. “I suppose I do. You challenge me in ways I never expected.”
Suddenly, the air around them shifted, a strange energy prickling the back of Caroline’s neck. Klaus’s demeanor changed instantly, his eyes narrowing as he scanned their surroundings.
“Something isn’t right,” he muttered, tension coiling in the air like a tightly wound spring.
Before they could react, a figure stepped out of the shadows, their presence sending a chill down Caroline's spine. Lucien stood there, an eerie smile plastered across his face.
“Well, well. Look what we have here,” he taunted, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “The little vampire and her big, bad wolf.”
Klaus immediately moved in front of Caroline, shielding her with his body. “What do you want, Lucien?” he growled, his voice low and dangerous.
“I came to deliver a message,” Lucien replied, feigning innocence. “But it seems you’re already aware of my intentions. I just wanted to ensure that my dear Caroline knows how fragile her life truly is.”
Caroline’s heart raced, fear coursing through her. “You’re not going to get away with this,” she shouted, stepping out from behind Klaus, determination flaring within her.
