The walk back to the Mikaelson compound was tense, neither Klaus nor Caroline saying a word. The truth of the situation weighed heavily on both of them. The fact that Lucien had gained power through an artifact made everything even more dangerous. Klaus was already strategizing, his mind whirring with possibilities, plans, and contingencies. Caroline, meanwhile, was trying to keep her fear at bay.
When they finally reached the compound, Elijah was waiting for them in the courtyard, a stern look on his face. “Did you find anything?” he asked, his gaze flickering to Caroline, noting her tense demeanor.
Klaus nodded curtly. “Lucien has an artifact, something old and powerful. It’s giving him strength beyond anything we’ve seen before.”
Elijah’s eyes narrowed. “What kind of artifact?”
“We don’t know yet,” Caroline replied. “But Davina said there’s a witch in the bayou who might be able to tell us more.”
Elijah sighed, rubbing his temples. “Dark magic. It always comes back to dark magic, doesn’t it?”
Rebekah appeared from the hallway, her gaze curious. “What’s this about dark magic?”
Klaus turned to his sister, his expression grim. “Lucien has found something, an artifact. We need to find out what it is and how to stop it.”
Rebekah rolled her eyes. “Of course he has. Why can’t any of these enemies ever just be satisfied with their own power? No, they always have to find some new way to be a pain in our asses.”
Kol, who had been lounging nearby, let out a snort. “Because, dear sister, they know that without a little extra help, they’re nothing compared to us.”
Caroline glanced at Kol, her lips quirking into a small smile. “And yet, they keep trying.”
Kol grinned, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “Ah, but that’s what makes it so fun, darling.”
Klaus shot Kol a look, his voice sharp. “This isn’t a game, Kol. Lucien is targeting Caroline. This is serious.”
Kol’s smile faded, his expression turning serious. “I know, brother. And that’s why we’ll make sure he regrets it.”
Freya entered the courtyard, her eyes flickering with concern as she took in the group. “I’ve reached out to my contacts. They’re looking into any artifacts that might be connected to Lucien. It’s going to take some time, though.”
Klaus nodded, his eyes meeting his sister’s. “We don’t have much time, Freya. Lucien won’t wait. He’ll strike again, and when he does, we need to be ready.”
Freya stepped closer, her hand resting on Klaus’s arm. “We will be. We’re in this together, remember?”
Klaus’s eyes softened, and he nodded. “Together.”
Caroline watched the exchange, her heart swelling with a mix of emotions. She had never expected to find herself here, in the midst of the Mikaelson family, fighting alongside them. But now that she was, she couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. This was where she needed to be, where she wanted to be.
Elijah cleared his throat, drawing everyone’s attention. “We have a lead. That’s more than we had before. We’ll prepare, we’ll strategize, and we will end this threat. Lucien may think he has the upper hand, but he underestimates the strength of this family.”
Caroline stepped forward, her eyes meeting each of theirs in turn. “We won’t let him win. Whatever it takes, we’ll stop him.”
Klaus smiled, a glimmer of pride in his eyes. He reached out, taking Caroline’s hand and giving it a gentle squeeze. “That’s my girl.”
Rebekah raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing at her lips. “You two done with the heartfelt speeches? We’ve got work to do.”
Caroline rolled her eyes, her lips quirking into a smile. “Yeah, yeah. Let’s get to it.”
