Ekko paced through the dimly lit streets of Zaun, the usual sounds of chaos and camaraderie mingling in the air. But today, his heart raced with a mix of anticipation and anxiety. He had heard whispers that Jinx was staying at a brothel for a couple of weeks, waiting until a plan was settled. As he approached the establishment, the familiar scent of smoke and laughter wafted toward him, both inviting and daunting.
Stepping inside, he was greeted by a cacophony of voices, but one in particular caught his attention—laughter, bright and genuine. He followed the sound, pushing past a group of patrons, and found Jinx and Viktor seated at a small table, their faces illuminated by the warm glow of flickering candles. Jinx's hair, now shorn into a jagged bob, framed her face in a way that made her seem both fierce and vulnerable. There was something undeniably beautiful about her—something that stirred his heart, even as worry gnawed at him when he noticed the bruises on her arms and the gauntness of her cheeks.
"What? You think Jayce's books made him sound smarter than he actually is?" Jinx joked, her laughter ringing out like music, momentarily dispelling the dark weight of their realities. Ekko couldn't help but smile, the tension in his chest easing as he watched her animatedly tease Viktor, who was chuckling in response.
But then his resolve hardened; he needed to talk to her, and he needed to do it now. "Jinx," he called out, his voice cutting through the merriment like a knife. She paused, her laughter fading as she turned to face him, the spark in her eyes flickering as she excused herself from Viktor's company.
As they stepped outside, the lively sounds of the brothel faded, replaced by the cool night air that brushed against them. Ekko felt the weight of the moment pressing down, and he searched her gaze for answers. "Do you love him?" he asked, his voice steady but filled with an urgency he couldn't quite suppress.
Jinx's expression hardened, and she shrugged, a defensive posture he had seen too often. "No. But at least I'm not a traitor," she shot back, her tone laced with defiance.
"What? How am I betraying you? I'm right here. I've always been here. I love you," he said, stepping closer, his heart pounding in his chest.
She stopped him, holding up a hand as if to ward off his words. "I don't care if you betray me, but you betray everything we stand for by dating an enforcer," she replied, her voice unwavering.
Ekko felt the sting of her words, a mixture of anger and pain rising within him. "Look who's talking! You sit here flirting with a crippled man from Piltover," he snapped, the frustration bubbling over.
Jinx's eyes flashed with indignation. "He's from Zaun, and he has never betrayed me. He has never abandoned me the way you and everyone else has. At least he has the common decency to know where his loyalties lie, regardless of working in Piltover—unlike some people who sleep with the enemy!" Her voice echoed in the stillness, a raw edge to her words.
Ekko swallowed hard, guilt washing over him as he tried to rein in his temper. He couldn't deny the ache in his chest at her words; they held truth, and he knew it. But all he could see was the bruises on her arms, the remnants of the battles she had fought alone, and it tore him apart. "Jinx," he said softly, trying to bridge the growing chasm between them, "you're beautiful and strong, but I'm worried. You've been through so much. You don't have to do this alone."
Her expression softened for just a moment, vulnerability flickering across her face. "I don't need your pity," she retorted, but there was a hint of uncertainty in her voice, and Ekko seized the opportunity.
"Then let me help you. We can figure this out together," he pleaded, reaching out, desperate to break down the walls that had been built between them.
Jinx's defenses faltered as she studied his face, the sincerity in his eyes clashing with her anger. "Ekko, I... I can't just forget what you've done. I can't just overlook the fact that you're with someone who stands against everything we fight for," she said, her voice trembling slightly.
Ekko rubbed the back of his neck, searching for the right words. "Look, I didn't mean to hurt you. Dany—she's been there for me in ways I didn't expect. After everything with you, I was lost, you know? She helped me cope, helped me find my way back to myself. It felt... safe. But it's not the same as what we had."
Jinx crossed her arms, the flicker of defensiveness in her eyes betraying the vulnerability she felt. "You know I'm not the same person I was. I've done things, Ekko. Things I'm not proud of."
"I know," he replied softly, stepping closer. "But I want you to know that I'm not judging you for it. We all have our battles. You've fought harder than anyone I know, and that's something to be proud of."
She looked away, the weight of her past pressing down on her. "What if I can't be that person for you again? What if I'm just this chaotic mess of a person, always running and never truly being able to stay?"
"Then we'll figure it out together," he insisted, his voice steady. "I don't expect you to be someone you're not. I love you for who you are now, Jinx, not who you used to be. I just want you to be safe. I want you to be happy."
Jinx met his gaze, the tension between them palpable. "What if I can't accept that version of myself? What if I can't be the person you want me to be?"
"Then we'll work through it," Ekko said, determination evident in his tone. "I'm not going anywhere. Just give us a chance to be... whatever this is. But you have to accept yourself first. You're the only one who can truly decide who you are now."
A moment of silence passed, Jinx contemplating his words. "You really mean that?" she asked softly, a hint of hope shimmering in her voice.
"I do," he replied, taking her hand in his. "I want to try. But you have to let me in, even if it's scary."
Her heart raced at his touch, the familiar warmth flooding her senses. "Okay. I can try," she whispered, her resolve strengthening. "But you have to promise me that you'll accept me—every part of me, even the broken pieces."
"Always," Ekko vowed, squeezing her hand gently. "You're not broken to me. You're just... you. And I wouldn't have it any other way."
Jinx smiled, a genuine expression that lit up her face. "Let's see where this goes then. But no pressure, alright?"
"No pressure," he echoed, relief washing over him. "Just us, figuring things out together."
Overwhelmed by the emotions swirling between them, Jinx stepped closer and wrapped her arms around him, pulling him into a tight embrace. Ekko hesitated for a moment, surprised by her sudden gesture, but then he melted into the hug, holding her close.
"God, I missed this," Jinx murmured against his shoulder, feeling a sense of comfort and security she had longed for.
"Me too," he replied, his voice muffled in her hair. "No matter what happens, I'll always be here for you."
As they stood there, wrapped in each other's warmth, the world around them faded away, leaving only the promise of a future that felt just a little brighter.
