A snail almost killed me

I woke up, and I had no idea where I was. My foot hurts like crazy. The doctor came in with Abuela, and I sighed in relief. The doctor was in his early 40s, average built, tall with black hair, and brown eyes. He smiled at me.

"Hello, Avery, how do you feel?"

"I'm okay but my foot." I replied.

"Yes, your foot will still sting a little but only for a while. You stepped on a cone snail shell. They are very poisonous and can cause instant death if not treated immediately. It was good that you got to the hospital while you did and that the amount of venom secreted wasn't lethal." The doctor said.

"We had to give you a tetanus shot just in case your wound was contaminated. You will be discharged tomorrow afternoon." He said.

"Um, doctor will I be able to walk long distances?" I asked. "Of course. Rest well." He replied, and I nodded. I struggled to sit up while the doctor left the room. "Careful, mija. You're still not well." Abuela said.

"I'm fine, Abuela. I'm not amputated or anything."

"Where's Peter?" I asked.

"He said he'll back later." She replied, and I nodded.

Just then the door flew open, and Bethel came in.

"Oh my gosh! Avery, what happened? Peter told me everything. Are you okay?"

I chuckled, "Would you calm down?"

"You sound sicker than I am."

"I am not kidding. Are you alright?" She asked concerned.

"I'm fine Beth." I said.

"So, you talked to Peter?" I asked.

"Yeah, he must've been worried poor thing. He had front row seats; ugh, I would've fainted right after you, my goodness." Bethel was being really dramatic right now.

"He just told me what happened and—"

Abuela cut her off, "Dears, I'm gonna go get something to drink, okay?"

We nodded, and she left.

"Peter told me he liked me."

Bethel gasped. "And you said?"

I stared at her with unbelief.

"So, what does this mean? Are you guys—"

"I mean, we didn't exactly finish talking but," I shrugged.

"Oh, that is so great." She said. "Considering that he had a fight with his parents."

"What?"

"Yeah, he came to apologize about that night but then he got a phone call from his dad, and they argued." She said. "Something about a scholarship and Europe."

"Oh, no, he only told me about the scholarship."

Bethel shrugged and smacked her lips.

I took a deep breath and stared at Abuela and Beth asleep; I couldn't sleep last night. Abuela made a muffled noise then Beth woke up. She slid down the floor, and I chuckled. She looked up at me, stood and smiled. "Morning!" She said. "Morning!" I smiled. "Shh!" She tiptoed across the room and opened the door. "Breakfast." She whispered, and I nodded and she left. I chuckled at her then I watched Abuela sleep.

Bethel came back later with food; finally, I was starving. "Look what I got!" She exclaimed.

"Okay, Bagel, Muffin, and Espresso for Abuela. Muffin, sandwich, and Latte for Avery."

"Black coffee and Banana bread for me."

"Hey, guys." Peter walked in. "Hey." We said. "How're you doing?" He kissed my forehead. "Better." I held his hand and smiled.

"Ooh, no one told me." Abuela said. I chuckled. "But I knew anyway."

"Really? How?" I asked. "Live as long as I did and you'll know." She replied.

We laughed.

"Okay, okay, let's eat." Bethel said.
