The rest of the week passed in a steady rhythm, each day blending seamlessly into the next as you settled into your new routine. By Friday, you felt a sense of normalcy creeping in, a welcome relief after the chaos of moving and the emotional toll of the past few weeks. You had attempted to reach out to your mom again, but her calls always came at odd hours, late enough that you were usually too exhausted to have a meaningful conversation. Tonight, however, you decided to stay up, knowing she would likely wait until your stepdad was asleep to call. This arrangement also gave you precious extra time to study, which meant more freedom for the weekend.

As the clock inched toward 11:00—just like the night before when she had called—you lounged on the couch in your suite, the soft glow of the TV illuminating the dim room. You were engrossed in an episode of All American, the drama on screen serving as a perfect distraction from your thoughts. When your phone finally rang, it felt as if the seconds had stretched into hours. You hesitated for a moment, heart racing, before flipping the screen around to see who it was.

Mommy💞

Your heart lifted at the sight of her name, and you swiped the screen to answer without a second thought. "Mami?" you spoke eagerly, your voice barely concealing the anticipation.

"Mariposa, qué bueno es escuchar tu voz," she replied, her tone warm and familiar. You felt a lump in your throat at the sound of the nickname you hadn't heard in what felt like ages.

"Mami, estaba tan preocupada por ti. ¿Cómo están tú e Izzy? ¿Todo está bien en casa?" you asked, trying to mask the worry in your voice.

"Izzy está bien, todo está en orden, Y/N. ¿Cómo te va en la uni? ¿Estás trabajando duro?" she responded, her voice reassuring.

You smiled at the good news, burying the uneasy feeling rising in your chest and forcing a compliant tone. "College is good, Mami," you breathed out, wishing for more than just surface-level pleasantries. "Can I talk to Izzy?" you asked cautiously, your heart sinking a little at the thought of not being able to connect with your sister.
