CHAPTER TEN!
"Your mom don't like me, huh?"
Connie pulls the car up to a quiet street in Bensalem, eyes roaming over the wide, neat lawns and large homes with polished exteriors. It's a far cry from the narrow streets and row homes he knows back in North Philly. The silence out here feels thick, almost unsettling. The street lamps cast a soft, almost golden glow on the sidewalks, and the only sound is the faint chirping of crickets. Everything about this place feels foreign to him."This where you grew up?" He raises his eyebrows, still taking it in. "This some real suburban shit. Ain't even no trash on the street." He tries to keep it light, but there's an edge in his voice—a mix of awe and discomfort.
"Pretty much," you mumble, almost self-conscious, watching his reaction. You're used to this place, but seeing it through Connie's eyes makes you feel like you're looking at it for the first time.
He whistles low. "Aight, I see you," he says, teasing.
You force a small smile, but your mind is racing. You've never brought someone like Connie into your world before. The differences between you suddenly feel sharper, more obvious, and you can sense his unease. You lead him up to the front door, heart pounding. Your mom doesn't even know you're coming home, let alone with someone she's never met.
