The police station was the most lackluster place in all of Crymont, which clearly explained the obvious lack of interest by the desk officer when Brynn had stated her purpose at the station.

His gaze drifted from his computer lazily, his eyes seeming to stare right through her, his tussled brown hair made him look more like a looney than a police officer. Running a hand through it, he leaned away from his computer and sighed, "what business could you possibly have with the Chief miss Kane?"

"I don't think you're in a position to ask." Brynn replied, adjusting her jacket closer to herself.

The officer chuckled, "right of course, and I'm guessing you don't have an appointment."

Brynn smirked, "I also don't think I need an appointment to see someone who's on my father's payroll."

He burst into a deep laughter earning some curious looks from the other officers, when his laughter had subsided, he leaned close to the desk, "everyone has heard of our Mayor's youngest daughter and her arrogance, didn't think I would experience it firsthand."

Brynn only shrugged, choosing not to reply.

The officer nodded as though confirming a thought in his mind, he pointed to a worn wooden chair by the wall, "if you'd please take a seat, I'll inform the chief of your presence." he said with a slight chuckle.

"Thanks."

Brynn walked to the chair and plumped down on it, she took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Contrary to how confident she had sounded, nervousness flowed through her veins and she could feel a deep chill in her bones.

She rubbed her palms together eliciting warmth, whilst wondering how long it would take for Mayor Kane to discover her misdeed and visit to Chief Rowan because certainly, he would find out so it was only a matter of how long she had to carry out her plans before he did.

Brynn sighed and looked up to the ceiling, the fluorescent light hummed overhead casting an unforgiving glare on the station. It frazzled her, made her doubt the smartness of her plans but it was the only way to protect her secret and get him out of her life.

She shut her eyes again as her mind took her back to a time in the past, some months or maybe even years ago. Brynn could see a tall room, dark and cold with a single flickering bulb, a hard bed and chain—

"Miss Kane?" the voice that called sounded faint to her ears but her mind was stuck in that memory.

Gentle gratings on the wall filled her ears, blocking out every other sound. In that dark room, a young girl stood by the wall with her hands chaffed from countless carvings on the wall. The door to the room opened and the girl turned around, the look in her eyes reminded Brynn of the fear, that same fear...

"Miss Brynn!" a hand on her shoulder shook the memory from her, she opened her eyes to see the concerned face of the desk officer, "I've been calling out to you but you seemed lost. Are you okay?"

Brynn looked around, she was no longer in the room but her heart pounded hard. She fisted her palms and nodded in answer, "was there any problem?" she asked.

He stared at her for a while and Brynn's eyes caught his name tag, Mark, "no but Chief is ready to see you now."

She got to her feet and smiled at him in thanks, walking towards the direction of his office.
