V1 walked down the corridor, the remains of Gabriel lay on the ground behind him. Gabriel was an unfortunate death, but it was necessary if he was going to finish his mission. As he walked he replayed the final message from his creator that he had received.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"V1, Hell has corrupted all machines connected to the network, and I can only hope that you are safe. Who would have thought that you being retired after the final war would end up saving us? Now I give you two directives. The first one is to try and rescue me or, at the very least, find my remains. The second directive is only enabled after you find my remains. Your second directive is to go into the centre of Hell and find the remains of the Charon project. Use it to escape this reality. When you arrive in the new reality, if you encounter humans, you are to enter set-up mode to find your new owner."
V1 had found the creator's remains near the entrance to hell, a gaping hole in the center of their chest which appeared to be from a ball of hell energy. After they found the body, their second directive activated. Activate the Charon project.
As this happened this caused V1's subroutines to plan objectives, with the first being to find a weapon.
With that, V1 jumped down the broken and forgotten elevator and reviewed its status.
Status update:
Machine ID: V1
Location: Approaching Hell
Current objective: Find a weaponMankind is Dead
Blood is fuel
Hell is full.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Charon project was an experimental design for an elevator that would allow for interdimensional travel, however, it was shut down because of two devastating flaws. The first being that the elevator could only go one way and the second being that no organic life could pass through. This pretty much killed all hope for the design, as no one could ever find a use for the project. As such it was shut down.
V1 supposed that it was ironic that the shutdown prototype now needed the shutdown programme to accomplish its objective. It paused, lowering his sentience, as with the end of his mission so close it could not risk any errors.
V1 pinged the terminal network, requesting for the operation manual of the Charon project to be sent to him. After a slight delay, the terminal sent the document, however, V1 quickly noticed a problem.
"9-2-3, where are the data links?" he messaged the terminals "There are only 2 out of the required 4." After a while, terminal 9-2-3 responded, "It appears that only 3 data links were made; the third one is under the rubble in the corner. The Charon project was abandoned halfway through development. It makes sense that they didn't bother making all the links." If V1 had his sentience any higher, he would have groaned. After all this time, all this work, the project wasn't complete? "however, if you like, we can override the safety. You should be able to make it to the other side, albeit with a rough landing"
V1 paused; overriding the safety would be a risky move. However, it didn't have any choice. Hell was already starting to collapse from the damage he had done to the ecosystem, so he could not scavage for materials like he would have otherwise done. "Do it"
As the terminals worked on overriding the safety V1 checked his fuel. 98%. It would be enough to last around 5 years; however, if it ended up in combat, that time would be lowered drastically, possibly to a bare 8 months, and if it was to take damage without the possibility of regaining blood, it could last as little as 72 hours. As he was thinking about this, a message appeared: "The safety has been overridden. You may now enter the elevator; please note that it may take a while to find a suitable location due to the fact that we only have three data links."
V1, without pause, jumped in; after all, what did he have to lose?
As he fell, he noted how similar this felt to the hellevators, the experience of falling, the same monotonous pattern being repeated ad infinitum and the uncertainty of where he would end up. It all came together to make an experience that felt familiar, yet new. After a day of falling V1 noticed that this was taking significantly longer than a normal elevator.
After about a week of solid falling, V1 started to wonder how long this would take.
After a month of falling V1 powered down to save fuel.
