The next day, Dami walked into the venue with her team, her heart racing with anticipation. She hadn't seen Namjoon in four years, and she wasn't sure how she'd react when she did. The thought of seeing him with Taehi was like a knife twisting in her gut. But she had a job to do, and she was determined to do it well.
When they arrived, Taehi and Namjoon were already there, standing under a willow tree, their heads bent together in discussion. Dami's eyes found Namjoon first, taking in his tall frame and the way his hair had grown out slightly, curling at the ends. He still looked the absolute same way as he used to, Dami noticed with a painful pang in her chest.
In the dappled light of the shallow forest, Kim Namjoon's presence was a haunting melody from the past. As he laughed, his voice was an achingly familiar sound that stirred deep, unresolved emotions within her. Dami halted in her tracks, her heart caught in a tumultuous storm of love, longing and hatred.
Each glance he cast, each smile he shared, cut through her with the raw intensity of feelings she thought had faded. The moment was a painful, beautiful reminder of the love she still harboured, making her heart ache with every beat.
She felt her knees buckle and she was saved from facing the embarrassment it would have brought by a hand. The person held her elbow firmly and yet gently and a warm minty sent filled her senses as she looked back.
"Thank...you?"
A huge smile formed on her face at the sight of her old, old friend. Yoongi stood their, with a cheeky grin on his own face after seeing her after so freaking long.
"You okay?" Yoongi's voice was low and concerned.
"Awie look at that. Not the cold, scary big boy asking me if I'm okay after seeing me four- no, is it five? Well, not you asking me that after such a long, Min Yoongi. Or! Have you finally grown gentle?" Dami asked, her earlier pain vanished as the bathed in joy of meeting her childhood best friend. Yoongi grins, his eyes glinting brightly as he ruffled her hairs.
"You haven't changed a bit, Dami. Still as sharp-tongued as ever." He released her elbow, his grip lingering for a second longer than necessary. "And yeah, four years, three months, and seven days. I've been keeping track."
Dami's cheeks flushed slightly, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. "Why, Yoongi, I didn't know you cared." She tilted her head slightly, her eyes twinkling as sunshine fell on them through the canopy of cherry bloom trees.
Yoongi's smile grew a little sad. "Always did, Dami. Just had to watch from afar." Dami grins fell to a soft smile.
"You know you could have called," she said. "I wouldn't have... ignored you, Yoongi, you are, my best friend. Forever."
He nodded solemnly, understanding in his eyes. "Yeah, I know. But you had your life, and I had the band. And, well, I didn't want to be the sad ex-bestie who couldn't move on. Plus, other than Taehi's taunting posts, you didn't need another reminder of it all, did you?" He says, glaring at a point above Dami's shoulder.
Dami sighed, looking away. "Taehi's like that. But I'm over it." She said, but her voice didn't quite match her words. "Never mind the old stuff, let's get this done! And then we can go back to the old tree-house maybe. Are you free after this?"
Yoongi nodded, his eyes lingering on Dami's face. "Always for you." Dami's eyes widen slightly.
"Oh my my, Min Yoongi flirting? How much has changed since four years?! God, I feel like Im running behind!" She exclaims as they started walking towards Namjoon and Taehi.
Yoongi leaned in closer, his voice a whisper in her ear. "Some things never change, Dami. Like how breath-taking you look when you blush." Dami rolled her eyes playfully, her cheeks now a shade of pink that matched the Sakura petals fluttering around them.
"Oh cmon Yoo-" her reply was cut short as Taehi turned, frowning and making Namjoon turn as well.
The moment their eyes met, the air grew thick with tension. Dami felt like she was back in high school again, caught whispering in class. But this was no classroom drama, this was her real life. The love of her life, standing before her, about to marry the girl who had been her closest confidant. She straightened her posture, squared her shoulders and walked towards them with a steely smile plastered on her face.
Namjoon's gaze locked onto hers and for a second, she saw a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. Regret? Surprise? She couldn't tell. His eyes searched hers, looking for something she wasn't quite ready to give away. His eyes then fell to Yoongi's hand, pressed against the small of Dami's back. Meanwhile, Taehi's grip on his arm tightened, a clear message of possession. Dami had to give it to her, she had always been a master of playing the game.
"Hello," she said, her voice surprisingly steady. "Lee Dami, I'm going to be your wedding planner. Hoping to have a civil co-operation." She says, raising her hand for a handshake, her words pointed towards Taehi.
