The rest of the night passed in a blur. Dami went through the motions of her evening routine, but her mind was elsewhere. The feel of Yoongi's lips on hers lingered, confusing and thrilling all at once. Her thoughts were a jumble of memories and emotions, a chaotic symphony that played on repeat.
The next day, she threw herself into work with renewed vigour, hoping to distract herself from the tumultuous events of the previous night. The office was a whirlwind of activity, with her team bustling around, making calls and checking off items on the wedding to-do list. Jae, her right-hand man and best friend, noticed the distraction in Dami's eyes and offered a concerned smile.
"You okay, boss?" he asked, setting a cup of steaming coffee on her desk.
Dami nodded, forcing a smile. "Just a bit tired," she lied, taking a sip of the coffee. She knew she couldn't hide from her feelings forever, but she needed to keep her professional persona intact, especially with the wedding still looming. She couldn't let anyone suspect that the personal lives of the bride and groom were affecting her work.
As the day went on, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. Her instincts, honed from years in the cutthroat world of event management, were telling her there was more to the story than she knew. And then, while searching through Namjoon's old emails to finalize the guest list, she stumbled upon it—a string of messages between Taehi and a mysterious person, filled with secrets and deceit. Dami's heart sank as she read through the incriminating exchange. This was the kind of scandal that could blow the whole wedding apart.
Her thoughts raced as she debated what to do with this newfound information. On one hand, her loyalty to Namjoon and her own heartache at his impending marriage to Taehi screamed to reveal the truth. On the other, her professional integrity demanded she keep the client's confidence, no matter the cost. The weight of the decision was crushing, and she knew she couldn't carry it alone.
That evening, she decided to confide in Yoongi, the one person who knew the depth of her feelings for Namjoon. She found him at their favourite coffee shop, his eyes glued to a book as he sipped on an americano. She sat down across from him, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. "I need to talk to you," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Yoongi looked up, immediately concerned. "What's wrong?"
Dami took a deep breath and recounted her discovery, watching the emotions play out on his face. His eyes widened in shock, his grip on her hand tightening. "What are you going to do?" he asked, his voice tight with tension.
Before she could answer, the door chimed, and a woman with a bright smile and a bouquet of flowers entered the shop. She made a beeline for their table, and Dami felt a knot form in her stomach as she recognized the familiarity in Yoongi's eyes.
"Babe!" she exclaimed, leaning in for a hug.
The air grew thick with tension as Jiwon turned to Dami, her smile slipping slightly when she realized she wasn't just any random acquaintance. "Oh, you must be Dami," she said, her tone warm. "I've heard so much about you."
Jiwon kissed Yoongi on his cheek, making him smile weakly up at her. Dami's eyes followed the moment. "I'm Jiwon, Yoongi's girl friend. And you are Yooni's best friend! Since-" Jiwon frowned for a second.
"Six." Yoongi and Dami spoke up at the same time.
Dami's gaze flickered between the two of them, and felt a pang of jealousy she hadn't expected. This was supposed to be her safe space, her moment of confession, but now it was tainted by the presence of someone who held a piece of his heart.
The conversation grew stilted as Jiwon recounted her recent travels and successes, her eyes sparkling with excitement. Dami felt invisible, her own problems seemingly trivial compared to the glow of Jiwon's happiness. She had always known Yoongi had dated before, but seeing him with someone who clearly had serious feelings for him was a stark reminder of their own unspoken tension.
As Jiwon left, a heavy silence fell upon them. Yoongi was the one who broke it. "I'm sorry, I didn't know you would-" Dami interrupted him without looking up from her latte.
"I guess you forgot to mention that you have such a beautiful girlfriend."
Her voice was even, but the hurt was evident. Yoongi sighed, running his hand through his hair. "It's complicated, Dami."
Dami looked up, her eyes meeting his. "Isn't everything?" she said, trying to keep the bitterness from seeping into her tone. She knew she had no right to be jealous, but the sight of Jiwon had brought her feelings for Yoongi into sharp focus.
Yoongi looked at her, his eyes filled with confusion. "What do you mean?"
Dami took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm of emotions raging inside her. "It's nothing," she said, her voice a bit too bright. "I just... I need to get going."
Yoongi's brow furrowed. "But we haven't even talked abou-"
"I know," Dami cut him off gently, standing up and gathering her things.
Yoongi watched her, his expression a mix of confusion and concern. "What's going on with you, Dami?"
Dami felt the weight of his gaze on her, but she couldn't bring herself to meet it. Instead, she gives him a small tight smile and gets up to leave.
Yoongi's hand reached out and wrapped around her wrist, stopping her from leaving. His touch was warm, grounding. "Dami, please," he said, his voice low and urgent. "Tell me what's wrong."
Dami's eyes met his, a silent conversation passing between them. For a moment, she considered confessing everything—the kiss, the emails, the storm of emotions that had been brewing since she saw Namjoon again. But she knew she couldn't. Not here, not now. "It's nothing," she said again, her voice a little stronger this time. "I just... I need to go."
Just as she was about to pull away, the door chimed, and Jiwon reappeared, her hand already reaching for her bag. "Oh, I forgot my..." she said, her voice light and oblivious to the tension that had suddenly thickened the air. Yoongi's grip on Dami's wrist tightened.
Jiwon's eyes widened slightly at the sight of their intertwined wrists, but she quickly recovered, flashing a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. She grabbed her keys and gave a small wave. "I'll see you later, Yoongi," she said.
Dami felt a twinge of regret for the way she had acted, but she couldn't shake the feeling of betrayal that had crept in. She didn't have the energy to deal with it now, not when her plate was already so full. "Thank you for the coffee," she told Yoongi, her voice strained.
Yoongi searched her eyes, his grip on her wrist gentle but firm. "Dami, wait," he pleaded. "We need to talk about this."
Dami's heart was racing, and she knew she couldn't stay. The walls of the coffee shop felt like they were closing in on her, the air thick with unspoken words and secrets. She tugged her hand free, the action feeling almost violent. "Not now," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Yoongi's expression fell, the hurt in his eyes cutting her deeper than she had intended. "Okay," he said, his voice resigned. "But we will talk. Soon."
