She began the lecture by talking about the increase in appetite among girls and boys around the age of ten and twelve respectively. She also shed light on how children belonging to this age group always seem to be hungry.
While talking about an adolescent's nutritional needs, Grace Beaman said, "Adolescence is a period when body needs more calories than any other stage of life. Boys, on average, need around 2800 calories a day, while girls need 2200 calories a day. Typically, the extreme hunger pangs begin to wane when the children stop growing. However, those who are tall and big or who have active participation in physical activities need increased amount of energy until their late adolescence."
Grace Beaman also shared some useful tips for parents to help their children make right food choices and stay healthy. She said that parents can play an important role in the health of their children by creating a healthy food environment. She advised parents to be thoughtful when choosing foods and pick something that is both nutritious and tasty. She also told about why she feels parents generally fail to motivate their kids to eat healthy. According to Grace, one of the biggest mistakes parents make while trying to motivate their kids to eat healthy is talking about the long-term consequences of unhealthy foods. She believes that the right approach is to talk about how healthy foods can help them with their performance in class, achieve better concentration, & improve their health. She also said that the whole family eating together too encourages children to eat well.
