~ Viatrice Curseheart, Umbra ~
Rhiannon Lara and I stand beside each other, then move so we are back-to-back, both ready for almost anything. Just then, a shining shaft of blinding light bursts through the forest around us. I cry out at it, my eyes sensitive to the light because we Umbras are accustomed to being in darkness. I sink forward, covering my eyes with my hands as my shadow blades vanish.
"Vi!" Rhiannon yells.
I open my eyes, lifting my head. Just as I do, Rhiannon is yanked from my side, pulled away by a Lumigloam who has a glowing gold chain that is wrapped around her throat and wrists. Rhiannon yells as the Lumigloam yanks her off her feet, dragging her away from me.
The tall Black man who is dragging Rhiannon away is laughing as he moves, but as soon as he sees me noticing him, he stops. The Lumigloam shouts something to his allies, who are then revealed to me, hidden from sight by his own power.
A tan skinned blonde Lumigloam girl runs at me, shimmering daggers glowing in her hands. Behind her is a Morphlike, who has taken the shape of a huge wolf. The Morphlike runs right at me, bolting past the Lumigloam. I narrow my eyes. They are trying to distract me, so their friend can take Rhiannon.
Rage builds within me, and I unleash a flurry of black tendrils that coil around the Morphlike. The creature she's become bellows in pain, barking and yipping as she is wrenched off her paws, then throw them against a tree several yards away. Meanwhile, the Lumigloam girl is battling each and every shadow tendril I send her way. But she is distracted.
Charging after the Lumigloam who has Rhiannon, I call my powers up through the dark well within me, the power that can allow me to shimmer from shadow to shadow. Then, I jump, teleporting from shadows up until I am right in front of the Lumigloam dragging Rhiannon.
"Let. Her. Go," I snarl.
The man drops her, and she is chained too much to move. Rhiannon yells in anger, her flames licking the chains. But they are made of light, so they can't burn. The man grins, then steps toward me, hazel eyes turning gold.
"You're outnumbered, girl," he snarls. "It's best if you just let us take her, she's ours, after all."
"She doesn't belong to you!" I cry. "She's her own fucking person, and you people won't ever get her in your twisted little hands."
The man shakes his head. "Tsk, tsk. You are a fool if you believe all that, girl. Don't you know that Umbras aren't strong enough to fight us Lumigloams?"
"Whatever helps you sleep at night, bitch," I growl.
I then unleash a barrage of shadows, all of them coming forth to confuse the man. He screams as one of the shadow tendrils rips into his flesh. But I don't care, or even turn back to see him suffer. Instead, I'm using my shadows to unbind Rhiannon.
"Vi," she says, panting hard. "There are more of them coming. They're in the woods, I can hear them."
"Then set it ablaze," I reply.
"What?! No! Our home, Vi, I cant!"
"Rhi, we can't go back home," I whisper. "They'd be able to find us again. We need to leave. Now."
She sighs, nodding as I help her to her feet. She takes my hand. "I love you." Then she wraps her arms around me, and I feel the heat of her powers as the Wildfire I love burns the forest we had come to call our home.
