It has been a stressful time for the Harris family. Just weeks ago, the two daughters, Y/n and Mia, buried their parents. It all happened so suddenly, one day they were there happy and the next, their parents were rushed to the hospital after a serious car accident involving a drunk driver.
The drunk driver died on impact and both parents passed away during transport to the hospital. Y/n was the one that got the call. Her world shattered in that split second.
The worst part was telling her younger sister. She was barely 18, just out of high school and preparing to start college.
That brought them to today, about a month after the accident. Mia was moving in to live with her sister and her wife, Gracie.
Y/n helped Mia pack up her stuff and move it all to her house. They packed up their parents' things and put it in a storage unit for now. Everything was just too fresh to decide what to do with their things.
Mia lived with their parents up until now, but the house was just a rental, so Mia couldn't stay there, it would be too expensive for her.
Truthfully, Mia didn't want to live alone. She had her parents right there her entire life. It would be too quick and big of a change. She accepted without a second thought when Y/n asked her to move in with her and Gracie.
Mia didn't know Gracie that well. They met on a handful of occasions but never really talked beyond the initial introduction. This was a chance for her to get to know Gracie. She was family now after all.
Y/n and Mia were always close growing up, even with their 6 year age difference. Y/n was always protective of Mia and loved her deeply. When Mia grew older, they became even closer.
A part of Y/n was ready for the day Mia would push her away. The typical teenage phase where they pulled away from their families, but that day never came with Mia.
Mia was always a sweet child and Y/n made sure that she was raised better than she was. Her parents were good people, but they were young and didn't have a clue what they were doing when they had Y/n.
Y/n didn't mind being the practice child as she watched her sister grow up into the woman she was today. She was happy that her parents were able to learn and adapt to being parents by the time Mia was born.
However this also meant that she had a much closer relationship with their parents and took the loss even harder.
It took almost two weeks after the funeral for Mia to start functioning again. She spent most of her time closed up in her room, sleeping away the days.
Y/n was able to bring her back from that rut, as much as losing their parents destroyed them, they had to move on. There was nothing they could do but continue living their lives to their full potential.
Mia had expected it to be awkward for a while when she moved in with her sister and someone she barely knew, but surprisingly, she got along well with Gracie.
Mia was grateful for the effort Gracie was putting in to get to know her. It helped distract her from thinking about her parents.
Tonight was the first night that she would sleep in a different bed than she had for years. In the process of moving, she still slept in the house she lived in. In a way, it helped her to process that her parents were really gone.
Y/n spent the nights with her. She didn't want to leave her alone in that house. It was also her way of getting closure. There were so many memories in that house and it would be the last chance she got to see it as it was before they packed everything away.
---
Gracie was already asleep when Y/n got up from bed. She couldn't fall asleep and figured she should check on her sister. It was a new environment for her, so it could be tough.
The door was cracked open, so Y/n just pushed it. She didn't want to knock in case Mia was actually asleep.
The door opened wider and she saw Mia sitting up in bed with the lamp on just staring at the wall. She didn't even react to the door opening.
Y/n knocked on the open door softly, bringing Mia out of her trance. She put on a small smile and gestured for her sister to come in.
"Can't sleep?" Y/n asked as she sat on the edge of the king-size bed. Mia still hadn't unpacked, so the room was pretty much empty, other than the furniture.
"Yeah. It's just- I don't know." Mia said, unable to put her feelings into words. Everything was just different, unfamiliar.
"Do you want me to stay with you?" Y/n asked as she looked at her sister. "No, it's fine. I'll be fine." Mia mumbled under her breath.
"Are you sure? For old times' sake? I really dont mind." Y/n asked. She remembered all the nights she stayed by Mias side until she fell asleep and all the times Mia clambered into her bed in the middle of the night after a nightmare.
"What about-" Mia started to ask, "she's asleep." Y/n said with a smile. She already knew what her sister would ask.
Y/n smiled as Mia gave in and patted the bed next to her in a gesture for her to come closer. She laid down beside her and Mia rested her head against Y/n's chest.
It didn't take long for them both to drift off into sleep as Y/n stroked Mias hair.

Over the next three weeks, Mia seemed to settle into her new life and new routine. Day by day, she was becoming more like her old happy self.
Y/n watched as Mia prepared breakfast with Gracie happily and felt guilty about what she would have to tell her.
Y/n was in the army for quite a few years now and she would be leaving on a deployment by the end of the week.
She entered the kitchen, kissing her wife on the cheek before shooting Mia a smile. "I'm happy to see you're getting along." Y/n commented as they finished making breakfast.
Mia grinned and handed Y/n a plate of food. "Yeah, she's awesome." Mia commented, making Gracie smile with a chuckle.
The three of them ate breakfast and then Y/n pulled Mia aside. "I have to tell you something." Y/n started and Mias demeanour changed instantly, she could tell it wasn't going to be good.
"I have a deployment coming up." Y/n told her, her eyes trained on Mias. "What? When?" Mia asked shocked. Somehow she hadn't seen this coming, she knew Y/n was in the army, but she wasn't really thinking about that.
"I have to leave in a few days, end of the week." Y/n told her straight up. "This week? And you're only telling me now." She asked frustrated.
"I couldn't tell you sooner, you already had enough going on and I figured you'd settle in better if I didn't tell you about it right away." Y/n explained.
"First mom and dad left me and now you're doing the same." Mia said sadly, but masking it as annoyance.
"I'll only be gone a few months. I'll be back before you know it." Y/n told her. "What if you don't?" Mia asked before she thought about her words.
"Mia." Y/n said sternly, her sister clearly didn't have much faith in her, but she shouldn't say things like this.
"It's not like it's impossible." Mia defended. She was technically correct, but it wasn't a high risk deployment so chances were very good.
"Mia, I promise I will be back. You don't have to worry, I wouldn't leave you all alone." Y/n said, trying her best to comfort her. She already had enough death in her life.
Mia nodded almost imperceptibly and Y/n pulled her in for a hug. "You'll be okay. And Gracie will keep you company while I'm gone, okay?" Y/n said softly as she hugged Mia.
"Yeah. I'll miss you. It just sucks, you know?" Mia said with a sniffle, trying not to cry. "I know. I'm sorry." Y/n whispered as she held Mia close.
