"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away"
"Hun, wake up. It's Monday today."
I woke up as my mother ripped my blanket off the bed and exposed my skin to the crisp wintry morning.
"Melissa..." she sighed, "Come on and get up. This is the third time in a row that you've slept in!"
She tried yakning my arm up but all I did was swat her's away and groaned, in my half-asleep voice. "I'm up okay!" I managed to mumble as I rolled out of bed and got ready for school.
I snuck a glance out the window as I began to comb my hair. The view outside was your ordinary view - trees, houses grass, fog - with the sun beams reflecting off of some house's window and blinding you slightly.
As I ran towards the kitchen after getting changed, I checked the time on my phone. Just past Eight o'clock. I snatched something out of the fruit bowl and shouted a quick goodbye to my mum. I heard a muffled response coming from somewhere in our home just before I closed the front door behind me.
Once I left our tiny fit-for-two flat, I checked my slightly crumpled time table from my pocket. I was disappointed to see that I had maths first thing on a Monday morning. I sighed as I quickened the speed of my steps. I passed the local bakery and the smell of freshly baked breads, pastries and cakes surrounded me. These are the little things I love about walking to school.
I passed by the day care/nursery several minutes later and heard sounds of both laughter and crying. I smiled to myself and remembered back to the time when I was that young. Hard to beleive that that was 13 years ago now that I was 16. And soon enough, after passing a book store, super market and a couple blocks of houses, I reached my destination. A huge sign read 'Ashville High School', the only school in our small town, excluding the primary school, so everyone who grew up here kind of got to know each other along the way with the occasional new kid here and there.
I rushed towards my locker only to see a slumped figure sitting down directly in front of it. It looked like it- he - was leaning over a notebook and hastily jotting something down, then he cursed and scribbled with his pen, probably because it had run out of ink.
"Uh.. Are you okay?" I asked as I neared him, raising an eyebrow. He didn't look up for a few seconds until I repeated my question for the second time.
"Huh? Yeah.. Just finishing off some late homework. This your locker?" he glanced behind him, at the locker which he had been leaning against. I nodded as he scooted over to make room for me to kneel down on the floor. This was the downside of having a bottom locker. There would be the occasional person blocking the way and you had to either bend down, kneel, or even sit down on the dusty floor.
"Sorry about that... I.. I thought no one had this locker. I mean I've never seen you come over here. At least I don't think I have," he mumbled to me, his face buried in his bag, searching for another pen.
Great. I'm the unnoticed invisible girl. He probably didn't even know I went to this school. Or even this town. I glared at the back of my locker as I heard him groan.
"Uh, you don't happen to have a spare pen on you?", he said, frowning at the empty one in his hand. I searched around my locker and found an old pink pen with that fluffy stuff at the top and tossed it to him.
