Susie

It was early on Sunday morning when a loud knock came on Susie's door. She half jumped out of bed at the sound.

Arken.

"Coming!" she called, rushing to open it.

It was not Arken.

"Urgent whole school assembly," said her Residential Advisor, a male wolf shifter with curly brown hair called Barnaby. It was a vampire name, a point of which other wolves never failed to tease him. It didn't help that he emulated the posh tone of many of the vampire elite.

"An assembly?" Susie asked. "What for? It's a Sunday."

Barnaby looked over his shoulder at her as he moved across the hall to knock on Molly's door.

"The headmaster called it. Not sure why. But...the omegas are being escorted there by guards. They're probably going to be reprimanded after they attacked you. Mark believes they'll be executed, but I told him that's complete poppycock. My guess is they'll all be whipped, and then suspended." Barnaby's chest swelled as he lifted his chin indignantly. "It's the least they deserve after what they nearly did to you."

Susie's stomach lurched.

"Nearly did to me?" She struggled to keep the accusation out of her tone as she glared at Barnaby. "Oscar and the others are part of your pack."

Barnaby blinked in quick succession and spluttered, "Hang on a moment, Susie—"

"And Mark is one of your alphas. I might not be in the Poplarin Pack, but he's still a leader at this school. As are you." She gave him a derisive look, the anger she hadn't realised was festering inside her breaking out. Barnaby was looking at her wide-eyed. "It's terribly convenient how everyone turned a blind eye to what happened to me and Molly. But I suppose the entire Poplarin Pack has taken an interest now that Arken is...is..."

Is interested in me.

Or was.

The anger in her fizzled out.

Barnaby cleared his throat and opened and closed his mouth several times as he tried to speak. Finally, he did what any sensible person would do when confronted with an uncomfortable truth. He brushed it aside and turned away from her.

He rapped on Molly's door impatiently, then gave an irritated sigh and jerked his thumb at her door. "Make sure she comes, will you?"

"Of course," Susie said, her voice cool and eyes narrowed as she watched Barnaby move on.

Pompous hypocrite.

She quickly changed into a set of casual clothes: an asymmetric blue skirt that brushed the tops of her knees at the front and grazed her calves at the back, and a pale grey shirt with long sleeves. She pulled on a pair of ankle-length boots in crimson velvet, which were too large for her even with the thick woollen socks she'd paired them with. They'd been the last size in the shop, and she'd fallen in love with them on sight. The knowledge that Arken would be at the assembly had factored into her decision to wear them.
