Y/N walked through the quiet streets, and her thoughts tangled in the day's events. She had spent the entire day on her own, soaking in the unfamiliar freedom, but now, with the evening creeping in, a shadow of unease began to settle over her. She couldn't escape the feeling that someone was watching her.
And she was right.
As she turned the corner onto a less crowded street, Y/N felt an odd prickle at the back of her neck, a sensation that sent her instincts into overdrive. She stopped in her tracks, scanning her surroundings, but everything seemed still. The city was alive, but no one seemed to be paying her any attention.
Or so she thought.
Suddenly, a familiar voice broke through the evening stillness. "Found you, little birdie."
Y/N's heart skipped a beat as she turned to see Nikolai leaning casually against a lamppost, his grin wide and playful, as if he had been expecting her all along. His mismatched eyes gleamed in the dim light, the usual spark of mischief and madness glinting in them.
"Did you really think you could slip away without me noticing?" he asked, pushing off the lamppost and sauntering toward her, his movements smooth and unhurried.
Y/N swallowed hard, her pulse quickening. She had been so careful, or at least she thought she had. But it was Nikolai—of course he would find her. He always did.
"I needed some air," Y/N replied, trying to keep her voice steady. "You know, a change of scenery."
Nikolai chuckled, the sound unsettling in its lightness. "Air, huh? You certainly chose an interesting way to go about it. Slipping away like a thief in the night... I’m hurt, really. No goodbye, no note." His tone was teasing, but there was an undercurrent of something darker in his words, something that sent a shiver down Y/N's spine.
Y/N took a step back, but Nikolai closed the distance with almost casual ease. His presence was overwhelming, a reminder that no matter how far she went, she could never truly escape the world she had been pulled into.
"I wasn’t running away," she said, though the words felt hollow even to her own ears.
Nikolai’s grin widened, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "Oh, I know, little birdie. You’re not a runner. But you are a wanderer, aren’t you?" He tilted his head, studying her with that unnerving intensity. "Always wondering what’s out there, what could have been if things had gone differently."
Y/N bit her lip, refusing to let him see how much his words hit home. "Maybe I just wanted to see what it was like—to be normal, even if only for a little while."
Nikolai’s expression softened, but only slightly. "Normal is boring," he said with a shrug before stepping closer, his voice dropping to a near-whisper. "And you, little birdie, were never meant to be boring."
Y/N felt a strange mix of emotions swirling inside her. There was something about Nikolai that both fascinated and terrified her. His unpredictable nature kept her constantly on edge, but there was also an undeniable allure to his chaos. Yet, being under his watchful gaze felt like being caught in a web she couldn’t untangle herself from.
"What happens now?" she asked, her voice quiet but steady.
Nikolai’s grin softened into something more sincere, though no less unsettling. "Now, we go back. Fyodor’s been wondering where his little bird has flown off to. I’m sure he’ll be so relieved to see you safe and sound."
The mention of Fyodor made Y/N’s stomach twist. She hadn’t forgotten about him—how could she? His cold, calculating eyes had always been on her, watching, assessing. He would not be pleased with her little excursion, and Y/N wasn’t sure she was ready to face whatever consequences awaited her.
