clementine"do you have to go?" i ask, my tone whiny. my dads hands on my shoulders tighten as he sighs, allowing his head to drop forward.
"i'm sorry, princess. you know how my work is." i can't exactly fight him on that, i do know how his work is.
apparently, being the best at your job—which is retail—means relocation. my dad works as apart of the management team, meaning he moves around to check on the other establishments pretty often.
i wish he didn't have to, i know for a fact he doesn't enjoy moving around this much and being away from mom and i, but he does it. for us.
"it's okay." i sigh, even though it's not. i'm not going to make him feel bad for trying to make us enough money to keep us stable, when my mother isn't exactly doing the same.
his lips tighten in what i'm sure is supposed to be a smile, before he smacks a kiss onto my forehead. "at least i'm driving you to school today, eh?"
"yeah, there's that!" i chirp, masking my emotions and facing my floor mirror, tightening my tie. technically, as a girl i'm not expected to be wearing the school tie, but i like how it looks.
i flatten the back of my above-knee length skirt, adjusting the straps. my dad pats my back lightly as a way of encouraging me.
i look into the mirror, making sure that every button on my blouse is buttoned. knowing me, i'd accidentally miss one.. or two. i also wear a zip-up, cropped, gray jumper which is only on for the hoodie that shields me from other people.
i use my fingers to brush my painted lashes upwards, making sure they stay curled that way. my glossed lips pucker as i take a step back, and sit my butt on my bed.
i pick up my doc martens that lay at the end of my bed, throwing my feet into them and tying the many laces.
"you look beautiful." my dad speaks, and when i look up at him he has a warm smile on his old face. a shy blush coats my cheeks at the compliment, and just as i'm about to thank him, my door is thrown open.
"hello, you two." my mom stumbles in, her smile displaying all of her bright veneers that could've payed for my college later on in my life.
"hey, chloe." dad walks up to her, and places a short-lived kiss on her bright red lips. her smile drops an inch, before her gaze strays to me.
"how is danielle?" she asks me, danielle being the fake friend i've established so they don't worry too much about my school life.
"she's good." i covey only joy, hoping they don't hear the longing in my tone. "we've decided to meet at school, which is why i'm going half an hour earlier."
i'm going half an hour earlier so i can run to the library and hide from the kids who love to torment me.
she gives me a knowing smirk, nodding her head. "i won't be home when you get here, they're keeping me late for work."
what work? i want to say, but keep my jaw snapped shut as i give her a clipped nod.
i finish with my shoes as my mom and dad continue a hushed conversation between themselves, standing up and looking down at my blouse buttons once again subconsciously.
