clementinei'm currently seated in the front row of my english class, at the very end of the desk with my hoodie shielding me from anyone behind me. this way, the only person that can actually see my face is mr leach—who is also an english teacher.
"day two! how are we enjoying school so far?" out of sync groans sound around the entire classroom, and mr leach lets out a laugh straight from his guts.
i perch my elbow onto the desk, and rest my chin on my clenched fist. my notebook and textbook lay open in front of me, plus one of mr leach's pink ballpoint pens.
he continues talking about what he has planned for us for the rest of this semester. it mostly includes reading a couple of books and doing reviews on them.
i listen intently, my eyes on the whiteboard behind him as he scribbles down a couple of book names, telling us to write the same thing into our notebooks.
i open said notebook, flicking to a random page and titling it 'english' so i know it's that, and not advanced history or whatever other classes are jambled into this one book.
the words on the board are slightly blurry, but big enough to be able to understand the writing. my eyes flicker back to the list of books every now and then as i jot down each title, some of them not familiar to me.
-lord of the flies
-the scarlet letter
-brave new world
-jane eyreit's jane eyre that i'm particularly interested in. hopefully that's the first book we read, and not the last.
just as mr leach opens his mouth to speak again, the classroom door is thrown open by one young man. i tilt my head up to look at them, my face falling flat when i see none other than pierce.
of course this happens to me of all people. of course i have a class with him after what happened in the library.
pierce and i have only ever had two classes together, and that's science from last year, maths from sophomore year. i guess this year it's english.
his gaze darts around the room almost as if he's looking for someone, i recognise that someone to be me when his eyes brighten at the sight of me.
i drop my head down, avoiding his gaze completely. "you're late, pierce." mr leach points out with an accusing tone.
"i didn't notice." pierce sarcastically grumbles out, completely disregarding our teacher.
out of my peripheral vision, i'm able to see his large figure approaching me. a knot suddenly forms at the back of my throat as i tuck my chair more into my desk, hoping he walks past me.
please walk past me,
please walk past me,
please please please.i'm not even surprised when he takes the spare seat right next to me, according to my luck today pierce sitting next to me in first period was on schedule.
"well, welcome anyways!" mr leach exclaims happily, turning back to the whiteboard and underlining lord of the flies.
he says something about the book, but i'm not listening. each sentence he forms turns into unintelligible mumbling as i feel pierce's eyes forming a dent into the side of my face.
