clementine"right," mr roan drops an entire stack of papers in-front of me with a grunt, standing upright to face the rest of the class. "quiz time."
everyone in the class starts talking, complaining all at once. mr roan rolls his eyes as he tries to settle them down, but no one is listening.
"we've only been at school for a week!" somebody yells. "two weeks, actually." mr roan corrects, holding up two fingers.
he's right, it's been two weeks. one week and two days since my drive-through hangout with pierce. one week and two days since i let go and became his friend.
he covered for me by saying he only sat next to me to piss off sadie, which to my surprise actually worked. i feel bad, keeping our friendship a secret. but they just can't know.
"clementine, hand these out will you?" i sink into my seat, too shy to say no but too scared to say yes. i trip over my own words, trying to figure out an excuse when someone comes to my rescue.
"i'll hand them out, sir." lucas shoots off of his seat at the back, sprinting over to my table and picking up the stack, sliding one worksheet over to me followed by his signature wink.
right, lucas knows. and some other guy named alex that i have yet to meet. by the looks of him, i don't want to. not in a mean way, in an i'm-scared-of-him way.
"thank you" i mouth, trying to stay hidden. "you're welcome," he says out-loud, and i groan.
lucas turns from me to the teacher, clearly plotting something. he's wearing his i'm-plotting-something face. it sounds funny, but he literally has a face for everything.
"sir, do me a favour?" he's whispering now, but i'm able to hear since he's right in-front of me. mr roan sighs, running a hand down his face as he turns to lucas. "yes, lucas?"
"in return of me handing these out, i want you to say you're forcing me to sit next to clementine for the day."
"lucas, i'm not going to say that." he shakes his head, monotone. lucas groans, tipping his head back in annoyance. "fine, twist the bloody words so it sounds less predatory, just something along the lines of that."
he ushers him with the wave of his hand, and mr roan stares at him in disbelief. he looks over to me for approval, and i nod with an amused smile.
"alright then. lucas, sit next to clementine for the day." he points at me for the extra affect, and lucas' face contorts. "try not to sound like you're at gunpoint."
"i am at gunpoint."
"i don't see a gun?""jesus," mr roan says something unintelligible under his breath, clearing his throat. "lucas, sit next to clementine for the day." he says it louder this time, with more emotion.
"well if you say so, mr david roan." he looks around the room as he replies, and i bite down my laughter when he yells our teachers full name. he tried to act like it wasn't a conspiracy, and failed.
i appreciate him doing this—subtly sitting next to me so no-one questions it, while also keeping me company. everyone knows lucas isn't mean, so they don't think it's weird when he's nice to me.
i pull my worksheet closer to me, looking down at my table. lucas goes around the room, giving people their sheets and saying flirtatious things to some of the girls he thinks are pretty, knowing it'll never go further than that.
