Black...
Blank...
Empty...
These were the only words fit to describe the endless void Kaida had fallen into after blacking out.
She could still hear the screams, see the blood, and feel the eyes of the creature boring into her soul. How it jerked its head towards her and whispered in a deep, scratchy voice, 'Do you want to play with me...?'
Ever since she blacked out, she'd been feeling this huge protective presence over her, as if a divine deity had descended the heavens for her sake.
It gave her comfort. But this comfort was short lived, as she started waking up, the scent of hospital filling up her lungs. The patient robes which were a few sizes too big on her, a searing pain in her stomach, a burning ache in her temples.
She stirred slowly, blinking blearily. Upon opening her eyes, she noticed that she wasn't the only one in the room.
There, in the far right corner of the room, there was a tall man, probably around two meters tall, with a blindfold over his eyes.
The first coherent thought to register in her brain was, 'Hagrid's long lost blind brother?' .
'No i am NOT blind and no, i am NOT a giant, you people are just tiny.' the man said.
'Did he just read my mind?'
'No, I didn't read your mind, i just have expert intuition.'
She finally found her voice to speak, her words coming out deep and raspy, 'M-My family...?'
The tall man's face seemed to soften for a moment. 'They're gone...dead.' He hesitated for a moment before adding on, 'I'm sorry for your loss.'
She tried to blink back her tears, the hot, bubbling grief boiling up in her chest all over again.
She cried for a few minutes, the man taking pity on her and turning around to let her cry in peace.
'H-How? What was that-that-that-thing in my house?!' she choked out between tears. 'Where is it now?'
'It's dead, you killed it...more like you exorcised it.' he said.
She calmed down upon hearing the news that the murderer was dead, but she raised a brow upon hearing the term "exorcised".
'Exorcised? Did I turn into a priest and baptise the thing?'
Yeah, she was confused.
'No, you exorcised it with your cursed technique' He said as fiddling with one of the flowers from the vase on the table beside her bed in a lazy fashion.
'Cursed technique?' She asked as she cocked her head to the side.
'Nationally, the average number of unexplained deaths and missing persons exceeds 10,000 annually. The majority are the result of negative energy that flows out of people. The result of a curse. There are cases that are also the cause of evil curse users.'
He paused, waiting for her reaction.
'M-My family was cursed...?' she whispered in a horrified tone.
'No, not cursed. You see, you come from a lineage of powerful sorcerers, Jujutsu Sorcerers, and the immense cursed energy that radiated from your house, plus the presence of a special grade cursed object too, attracted that monster, well, curse, to be specific.'
She was even more confused now.
'Special grade cursed object? Is that some kind of taboo charm like a vodoo doll?'
'No, it's an object which contains sinister cursed energy, more like an incarnation of a curse, which, on consumption by curses, can make them more than a hundred times stronger than they already are.' He said as he snapped the flower he was holding into two pieces.
'I'm here to offer you a place at a special place, a special school, one where you learn to fight curses with curses. At Tokyo Prefectural High School, we learn about curses in order to exorcise them.'
She nodded along, the gears in her brain slowly turning and registering what he was saying.
'You get it? Or is it all just going over your head?'
'I get it, I get it...' She still sounded uncertain.
She continued 'When you mentioned cursed technique, does that mean that every sorcerer is born with some sort of technique?'
'Not necessary, some sorcerers are not born WITH a cursed technique, they have to learn it, like simple domain for example.'
'Woah.'
'Can you tell me whether your mom or dad told you anything related to all this?' He said as he took out a chair, the legs scraping along the hospital floor as he sat down beside her bed.
She wracked her brain for anything, a foggy memory coming back to her...
'Yes i think they did...' She said, still thinking for any more intel.
'They did sit me down once when i was 10 and telling me something like... like if anything ever happened to them, the first person to call was my grandpa... and the second step was to find you...they said that you'll guide me...same thing goes for my older brother, they gave him the same advice.'
She paused then spoke again.
'They said that in the event that the both of them were murdered by some non-human species, to find you...tall man, blindfolded, white haired. Your name is...Mr. Gojo Satoru, correct?'
The man, Satoru, grinned proudly.
'Heh, so he still trusts only me huh?'
'Yes, my name's Satoru Gojo, your dad was my senior when he used to be a sorcerer, and he was a damn strong one, kicked my ass hundreds of times.'
This elicited a small, half smile from her 'Really?'
The man sighed, placing a gentle hand on her head, tousling up her soft locks. 'Really...'
But she was confused again. 'But...if he was so strong...w-why didn't he...why didn't he win that day...?'
The man's expression hardened, his hand stopping its movement on her head.
'Well...dear Kaida, your father...i don't know if this is the right thing to do to tell you myself...whatever, your father, dear Kaida, had left the Ryūgetsu clan when he got married to you sorceress mother. He wanted for you and your brother to have a normal childhood. He gave up his life as a sorcerer, and ended up leaving the clan.'
'But that doesn't explain why he couldn't save himself and all of us...'
'Well...i hate to say this but i think your father might have overestimated his skills. The last thing i remember him saying to me is "I'm not gonna let my children see even a single flyhead, i'm gonna protect them all so well that they'd never need to face the curse world ever again." but clearly...he couldn't. I hate to say but i believe your father was overconfident and overestimated his powers.."
She looked like she was still in disbelief, but stayed quiet.
The man took a little pity on her and placed a gentle hand on her head, ruffling her soft locks a bit. 'So...do you accept?'
She blinked. 'Accept what?'
'Gosh this one's a bit dumb' He internally thought.
'Do you accept my invitation to Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School?'
'She hesitated for a moment.
'This means I can save people from the pain I endured, right?'
'Well of course, to some extent.'
She still hesitated, thinking of her parents, who worked so hard to protect her from this world...
'I accept.' She said after a few seconds.
To be continued...
