Stan stirred in his sleep, his eyes slowly opening as he felt a slight pain in his back. The man looked over at the woman asleep in his arms, they were a bit cramped in his single bed, but he was too happy to care. He leant forward kissing her forehead gently, but jolted up as he heard his door slam shut. The sudden movement pushing Lucile onto the ground. She groaned and wiped the blood pouring out of her nose. "Ugh..."
"Ah shit! Sorry Luce!" Stan grabbed the closest cloth he could find, stopping the blood running down her face.
"I'm fine..." Lucile muttered with a weak smile, still half asleep until she heard whispering from downstairs. Her eyes darted to the bedroom door. "Did you hear that?" She asked in a hush tone.
The man opened a shelf, pulling out a pair of brass knuckles. "It came from downstairs." He put the weapons on his fingers and tossed her a wooden bat, pressing a finger to his lips before he silently opened the door. The pair crept down the stairs until they could see shadows moving around the shack.
Stan grit his teeth before he tried to get a jump on the intruders. "GET OUTTA MY HOUSE YA FREAK!" He yelled. But before he could fight anyone, a banjo was swung, hitting him across the face. Stan fell to the floor, rubbing his cheek. "Fuck!"Lucile peaked her head out from the wall, seeing one of the townsfolk lecturing Stan. "Dagnammit watch where yer swinging them things!" It was Oldman McGucket, an older man who was usually brushed off as just an old kook.
"What are you doing in my house Fidds?!" Stan grunted, rising back up to his feet and snatching the banjo from McGuckets hands.
"The world's reckoning an' people need a place 'fer safety" The hillbilly spoke, gesturing to all the people he'd lead inside. There were many other people from town, including children. But not just humans, McGucket had brought in a unicorn, little men with pointy hats, a bear with multiple heads, and what looked like a jacked centaur.
Stan looked over at the crowd, about to object when Lucile ran past him. "Grenda!" She picked up her daughter, hugging the young girl tightly. "I thought you were hurt, I'm so happy to see you again Sweetie!"
Stan smiled as he saw how relieved Lucile was, but when he turned to the rest of the crowd his expression was stone cold. "That's all good and crap, but I can't just have a bunch of strangers taking up my house!" The older man pointed to the door and glared at them.
"Stanley-" Lucile tried to reason with him but he wasn't hearing it.
"No. We'll run out of supplies!" He insisted.
"You stubborn old jerk..." She glared at the man, glancing back at the crowd. Knowing that fighting wouldn't do much, the woman calmed herself down. "Fine, but I'll be leaving with them."
That made Stan's face lose all colour, he stepped forward clutching her hand tightly. "Luce you can't!"
"I'll just waste supplies here, won't I?" Lucile crossed her arms, looking into his eyes with a firm stare.
His eyes darted to the window seeing the red sky. He knew if he let her leave the house, she'd end up hurt. Or worse. "You can be real manipulative ya know..." Stan muttered, but she just smiled coyly. The older man sucked through his teeth and groaned in defeat "...Fine, they can stay" As everyone set up camp inside, Stan leaned over and whispered in Luciles ear "If we run out of food I'm eating the little guys first."
"That's disgusting... but you have a deal." The woman begrudgingly shook Stans hand, he walked past her and stood in front of everyone.
"Alright listen up freeloaders!" He said in a booming voice. "While this creepy end of the world is going on, I'm the chief! Ya got a problem with that, ya can just leave my house!"
"That's my guy..." Lucile whispered to herself, leaning against the doorframe as she watched him take charge. She looked down at her daughter and started wiping the war paint off her face. "Come on Sweetie, let's get you some water" She said, leading the young girl to the clean water.
3 days later
Stan had taken to the role as Chief half decently since Mcgucket brought people there for safety. Sure Stan was a bit of a jerk, but he made sure no one caused any issues. The food was rationed and the group had established protocols for any eye bats on patrol of the shack. The apocalypse had gone on for a week at this point, hope was dying out and Lucile still hadn't seen Ford since he told her to stay in the house.
Lucile sat in the tv room, gently stroking her daughter's head while the girl was sleeping. Stan watched from the doorway, placing a hand on the womans shoulder "You should get to bed Luce... Staying up isn't going to do you much good"
"Don't you think I already know that?" She snapped back, looking down at Grenda "I don't know how long I can do this Stan... It feels so hopeless."
Stan sighed, taking a seat beside her. "I know. Truthfully I'm scared shitless..."
"But you've been so... happy about this apocalypse."
"I'm just being delusional! I haven't seen my family since they ran out!" The man exclaimed, letting out a panicked laugh. "They could be dead Luce! And I'm just helpless to stop it!" Stan was smiling but his eyes started to water, he rubbed his eyes and rested his head on Luciles shoulder. "But you're here and you're safe here... that's what I focus on." The man looked at the ground somberly, until a branch snapped outside. Stan and a few of the others turned their heads to the front door.
He quietly stood up, grabbing his bat as he crept closer to the door. "Stan?" Lucile whispered.
"It's not a bat, go get the gun in the bedroom!" He whispered back, Lucile ran upstairs as the other survivors gathered behind him, ready to attack whoever or whatever came through the doors. There was a moment of silence until the door burst open, the survivors letting out a war cry.
Mabel, Dipper, and 2 others rushed inside screaming. Thinking they'd be attacking a monster, the young twins lowered their weapons when they saw who was inside "Grunkle stan?!" The children asked in disbelief.
"Kids?!" Stan dropped his bat and reached his arms out, letting the kids run to him. "I can't believe it! I thought I lost you two!" The man smiled widely, hugging his grandchildren.
In the middle of the touching family moment, one of Stans workers Soos hugged the older man "Mr Pines, it's really you!" Soos said excitedly. "I've been hugging strangers to practice for this moment!"
At the same time another of Stans employees jumped atop of him, a young teenage girl named Wendy. "We missed you, you old codger!"
