The Mid-Autumn Festival enveloped the imperial city in a tapestry of light and color. Lanterns of every hue adorned the streets, swaying gently in the evening breeze. The scent of mooncakes and sweet osmanthus filled the air, mingling with the sound of laughter and music that echoed through the palace courtyards.
Inside the grand banquet hall of the palace, nobility and esteemed guests gathered to celebrate. The hall was a marvel of opulence—silk banners draped from towering pillars, and intricate tapestries depicted legendary tales of heroes and mythical creatures. At the center sat Emperor Zhao Mingde, his presence commanding yet warm, as he engaged with guests and presided over the festivities.
Li Ancheng, resplendent in an elegant gown of deep sapphire adorned with silver embroidery, stood beside her brother Li Ming and Zhao Xue. The couple radiated happiness, their engagement now officially celebrated among the kingdom's elite. Ancheng's gaze drifted across the hall, ever vigilant despite the merriment surrounding her.
Crown Prince Zhao Yang approached her with a subtle smile. Clad in regal attire that accentuated his noble bearing, he leaned in slightly. "Ancheng, you seem distant tonight. Are the festivities not to your liking?"
She met his eyes, a hint of mischief flashing within her own. "On the contrary, Your Highness. The celebration is magnificent. However, I find myself longing for a breath of fresh air away from the crowd."
Zhao Yang's smile widened. "As it happens, I was considering a similar escape. Perhaps we might sneak away and enjoy the festival from a different perspective?"
Ancheng arched an eyebrow playfully. "Are you suggesting we abandon our own banquet?"
"Just for a short while," he replied lightly. "After all, even royals deserve a moment of freedom under the moonlit sky."
She glanced around, ensuring they were not the focus of attention. "Very well. But first, there are some matters I must attend to."
Ancheng discreetly made her way toward the General commanding the palace guards, General Wu Jian, a seasoned soldier known for his loyalty and keen instincts. He stood at attention near one of the hall's grand columns, his eyes scanning the room with practiced vigilance.
"General Wu," Ancheng greeted quietly.
"General Li," he replied with a respectful nod. "How may I assist you?"
"I will be stepping away from the banquet briefly," she informed him. "I trust you will keep a close eye on the proceedings in my absence?"
He nodded solemnly. "Of course. I will ensure everything remains in order."
Ancheng leaned in slightly, her tone softening. "Also, if anything unusual occurs, please inform my subordinates immediately. I have stationed my soldiers around the imperial city as an extra precaution."
General Wu's eyes flickered with understanding. "You anticipate trouble?"
"One can never be too careful," she replied enigmatically. "Especially during times of great celebration."
"Understood, General Li. You can count on me."
With that assurance, Ancheng slipped back through the crowd, rejoining Zhao Yang near a side entrance concealed by ornate draperies. Sharing a conspiratorial glance, they deftly navigated their way out of the banquet hall without drawing attention.
Once outside, the cool night air greeted them, carrying the distant sounds of the city's festivities. The palace gardens stretched before them, illuminated by the gentle glow of lanterns hanging from the branches of ancient trees. The full moon hung low in the sky, its silvery light casting an ethereal sheen over the landscape.
