The sun began to set over the campsite, casting a golden hue over the forest. The students gathered around the fire pit, their faces glowing in the flickering light of the flames. Conversations bubbled up—everything from college plans to wild campfire stories meant to scare the more timid among them. Dominic sat on one of the wooden benches, a stick in his hand as he prodded at the fire. His friends were busy trading jokes, but his attention kept drifting back to the growing shadows in the trees beyond the camp.
Something about this place felt different as the darkness settled in, the shadows lengthening and deepening like an unseen presence was creeping closer.
Across the fire, Sarah sat quietly, her gaze flicking between the flames and the forest. She wasn't much for ghost stories or group conversations, but something about the night was unsettling. It wasn't just the cold, or the isolation, or the way the trees seemed to whisper when the wind moved through them. It was something deeper. Something she couldn't quite explain.
One of Dominic's friends nudged him. "Hey, Dom, you spacing out on us?"
Dominic shook his head, forcing a grin. "Nah, just thinking."
"About what? Your girl?" his friend teased, nodding toward a group of giggling girls sitting across from them.
Dominic didn't respond, his eyes once again drifting toward the shadows at the edge of the campsite. His friend followed his gaze and gave him a puzzled look. "What are you looking at?"
"I don't know," Dominic muttered. "But something feels weird, doesn't it?"
His friend shrugged, tossing another log into the fire. "It's the woods, man. Always feels weird out here."
Dominic didn't argue, but the uneasy feeling gnawed at him. He glanced over at Sarah, who was sitting alone. Their eyes met briefly, and for a moment, it felt like they were the only two people in the camp who sensed something wasn't right.
Suddenly, a loud crack echoed from the trees. Everyone froze, their conversations dropping off mid-sentence. The sound wasn't from the fire—it was deeper, sharper, like the snap of a branch being crushed underfoot.
"What was that?" someone asked, their voice tinged with nervous laughter.
The teacher, who had been sitting off to the side, stood up quickly. "Probably just an animal. Everyone stay close to the fire."
But Dominic wasn't convinced. His muscles tensed as he scanned the treeline. The firelight flickered, casting long shadows across the ground, making it harder to see. His heart began to pound in his chest, the same feeling of dread he'd felt earlier now doubling in intensity.
Another crack, louder this time. Then a gust of wind blew through the camp, and the flames surged, throwing sparks into the air. The shadows danced wildly, as if the forest itself was coming alive.
"I think we should go back to the bus," Sarah's voice broke through the silence. It was the first time she had spoken up, and her voice was steady but laced with fear.
A few students laughed nervously, but there was an edge to their laughter now. The crackling fire was the only other sound, and with every second that passed, the tension grew thicker.
"Maybe she's right," Dominic said, standing up and brushing the dirt from his hands. "Something's out there."
Before anyone could respond, a piercing scream shattered the stillness. It came from deep within the forest, so sudden and so shrill that every student jumped to their feet, their faces pale with shock. The teacher turned toward the sound, her expression tightening with alarm.
"What the hell was that?" Dominic muttered, his heart racing.
The scream came again, closer this time. Then, without warning, the fire sputtered out, plunging the campsite into complete darkness.
Chaos erupted. Students stumbled over one another, shouting and scrambling as their eyes adjusted to the sudden loss of light. Someone tripped over a log and cursed loudly, while others fumbled for their flashlights, their beams flickering on but revealing nothing beyond the first few feet of the forest.
Dominic's breathing quickened as he grabbed his own flashlight from his backpack. He swung the beam toward the tree-line, his heart hammering in his chest. But the forest stood still, silent, as if the scream had been swallowed by the darkness itself.
Sarah stood frozen, gripping her flashlight, her breath coming in shallow gasps. She stepped closer to Dominic without thinking, her mind racing.
"Do you think it's one of the students?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the chaos.
"I don't know," he said, his voice tense. "But we need to figure out what's going on."
Just as Dominic took a step forward, the trees seemed to shift in the distance, the darkness parting for the briefest of moments. And then, from the shadows, a figure emerged—tall, silent, and watching them.
