For what felt like an eternity, no one moved. The figure stood just at the edge of the forest, partially obscured by the darkness, watching the students with an unnerving stillness. Dominic's hand tightened around his flashlight, its beam locked on the mysterious figure. The air seemed to thicken, pressing down on them as an icy chill swept through the clearing.

"Who is that?" Sarah whispered, her voice barely above a breath.

"I don't know," Dominic replied, his eyes narrowing. He tried to steady his breathing, but his heart was hammering in his chest. "Stay behind me."

The figure took a step forward, breaking through the line of trees. In the faint light, Dominic could make out a shape—tall and thin, almost too thin, like it didn't quite belong in this world. The fire was still out, leaving the campsite bathed in shadow, and the faint beams from the students' flashlights seemed to do little to cut through the thickening darkness.

"Whoever you are, you need to stay back!" the teacher called out, her voice steady but laced with panic. She had moved toward the front of the group, her flashlight pointed directly at the figure. "This is private property! We're not looking for trouble."

The figure didn't respond. Instead, it continued to step forward, slow and deliberate. The students began to murmur nervously, edging closer together as the tension grew. Dominic's mind raced, trying to figure out if this was some kind of twisted joke or if they were in real danger.

Suddenly, the figure stopped, just beyond the circle of students. For a moment, everything was deathly silent. The only sound was the wind rustling through the trees, carrying with it an ominous whisper.

Then, without warning, the figure bolted toward them with a speed that seemed unnatural.

Screams erupted as the students scattered in every direction, panic setting in like wildfire. Dominic grabbed Sarah's arm, pulling her away from the chaos. They ran, weaving through the tents and ducking under low-hanging branches as they pushed deeper into the forest. The sound of footsteps—heavy, rapid, and far too close—followed them.

"Keep going!" Dominic shouted, his voice hoarse from fear. He didn't dare look back. Every muscle in his body screamed for him to move faster, to get away from whatever was chasing them.

Sarah's breath came in short, desperate gasps as she struggled to keep up, her heart pounding in her chest. The woods around them blurred into a mass of shadow and movement as they pushed through the underbrush, branches tearing at their clothes and faces.

They ran until their legs burned, until the sounds of the campsite faded into the distance. Finally, when they could run no longer, they stumbled to a stop in a small clearing. Dominic collapsed against a tree, chest heaving, while Sarah dropped to her knees, struggling to catch her breath.

For a few moments, neither of them spoke, the adrenaline still coursing through their veins. The forest around them was eerily silent, save for the occasional rustle of leaves in the wind.

"What... what was that?" Sarah managed between gasps.

"I don't know," Dominic said, his voice barely above a whisper. He wiped the sweat from his brow, trying to make sense of what had just happened. "But it wasn't human."

Sarah shuddered, hugging herself as the reality of the situation sank in. "We can't stay out here," she said. "We have to find somewhere safe."

Dominic nodded, pushing himself to his feet. His mind was racing, but one thought rose above the rest—the cave. They had mentioned it earlier on the bus, just in passing. A hidden cave somewhere in these mountains, a place that only a few locals knew about. If they could find it, maybe they could hide there until help arrived.

"We need to find that cave," he said, his voice filled with a new sense of urgency.

Sarah looked at him, her eyes wide. "Do you even know where it is?"

"No," he admitted. "But it's our best shot. We can't go back to the camp, not with that thing out there."

A cold knot of fear twisted in Sarah's stomach, but she nodded. "Okay. Let's go."

Just as they turned to leave the clearing, a twig snapped behind them. Dominic whipped around, his flashlight beam cutting through the darkness. For a moment, all they saw were trees, their gnarled branches swaying in the breeze.

And then, from the shadows, the figure emerged again—closer this time.

Its hollow eyes locked onto them, and without a second's hesitation, it lunged.
