Today is October 4th, and the crisp autumn air signals the arrival of fall. I'm eagerly looking forward to Halloween! It has been several weeks since Jonathan and I completed our counseling sessions, and I'm grateful that we've been able to restore our relationship to its former strength. With October in full swing, Jonathan and I have been enthusiastically planning our Halloween costumes as Mrs. and Mr. Incredible. I suggested the idea because we've never dressed up as a matching couple for Halloween before, and it's something completely new and exciting for us.

The living room was filled with the warm glow of pumpkin spice candles as I carefully placed Halloween decorations in every nook and cranny. Meanwhile, Jon was outside transforming our front yard into a scene reminiscent of 'The Night Before Christmas' with whimsical inflatables and strings of orange and white lights adorning the house. I lit two pumpkin spice candles on the glass coffee table, and then my phone rang. I laid the lighter on the table and answered it.

"Who is this?" I asked, my curiosity piqued as I held the phone to my ear. An unsettling silence hung in the air, the kind that makes your heart race. The person on the other end remained mute. "If you're not going to speak, I'm hanging up!" I snapped, irritation bubbling up as I rolled my eyes in frustration.

"Wait! Please don't hang up!" came a voice I knew all too well. The moment I recognized it, a wave of dread washed over me, and my stomach twisted in knots. I instinctively covered my mouth, fighting the nausea that threatened to rise.

"I realize what I did was unforgivable, and I never meant to hurt you. I'm so sorry, Nicole. I can't bear the thought of you leaving my life," Joshua's voice pleaded from the other end. Confusion swirled in my mind; how had he managed to get my new number after everything that had happened between us?

Jonathan entered through the front door, carrying an armful of unnecessary decorations. He noticed the distress on my face as I was on the phone and immediately asked, "What's wrong?" I gestured for him to wait and mouthed the words "Hold on." Jonathan stood there with a concerned expression, arms crossed, waiting for me to finish the call and explain.

As I maintained eye contact with Jonathan, I listened to Joshua's words on the phone: "I can't live if living is without you. We are meant to be." Silent, I hung up the phone and placed it on the coffee table. Sitting down on the couch, my mind raced with thoughts about Joshua's possible actions.

Jonathan came over, settled in beside me, and wrapped me in a comforting hug. "Nicole, what's going on? I can't bear to see you like this. Please, sweetheart, tell me what's bothering you," he urged, his voice filled with genuine concern. The warmth of his embrace enveloped me, but the weight of my anxiety felt heavier than ever.

I met his eyes, tears threatening to fall. "I was on the phone with your brother, Josh," I confessed, my voice trembling as I struggled to hold it together. "He somehow got my new number and started professing his love for me," I said, wiping away a tear that had escaped down my cheek. The memory of the conversation replayed in my mind, each word echoing like a haunting melody that I couldn't shake off.

Jonathan fell quiet, his face a mix of anger and disbelief. I could see the gears turning in his mind as he processed what I had just revealed. He rubbed his forehead in frustration, a gesture I recognized all too well. "Are you still involved with him?" he asked, his voice low and serious. The question hung in the air, heavy with implications. I quickly assured him that it was over, that I had cut ties with Josh long ago.

"I hope that's true. I hope you're not seeing him. I told you this is your last chance, Nicole," he said, his tone serious, almost like a warning. The intensity of his gaze made my heart race, but I knew I had to be honest. "I know! But you have to understand, I'm terrified, Jon! I'm scared he might hurt me or even us!" I cried, my emotions spilling out like a dam that had finally broken. The fear I had been holding inside surged forth, and I felt vulnerable, exposed in a way I hadn't anticipated.

His expression shifted to one of guilt, and I could see the conflict in his eyes. He wrapped his arms around me, gently rubbing my back as he promised to keep us safe. "I won't let anything happen to you, Nicole. I promise," he said, his voice soothing yet resolute. He pressed a soft kiss on my cheek, and I could feel the sincerity in his vow to protect me.

As he swayed us gently, his hand cradling the back of my head, I began to calm in his embrace. The rhythm of his heartbeat against my ear was a steady reminder that I wasn't alone. "He comes nears you, I will kill him. No questions asked." Jonathan said with his voice full of determination.

The weight of Jonathan's words settled heavily in the air, and I could tell he meant every syllable. I longed to speak up, to sway him from this dark path, but I stayed quiet, nestled in Jon's embrace. My mind raced with regret, replaying the moment I crossed the line with his brother, wishing desperately that I could erase the chaos it had unleashed.
