↳ ❝ [ falling petals ] ¡! ❞
THE EVENING SKY BLED into a twilight haze, shades of lavender and deep indigo blending like spilled ink. Lyra walked with steady steps, her black dress swaying gently with the soft, late summer breeze.
She sighed, glancing down at her phone, her thumb hovering over the text she had just sent.
"We need to talk."
The words hung heavy on the screen, lingering between them like an invisible boundary. Moments later, a simple reply lit up her screen: "K." Just one letter, cold and detached, as if dismissing her feelings before the conversation had even begun.
With a soft exhale, Lyra switched off her phone and tucked it into her pocket. The world felt quiet around her, too quiet, as if holding its breath in anticipation of the storm to come.
She slipped into her slippers and began her walk to Kyle's apartment, six blocks away.
The rhythmic sound of her footsteps echoed against the pavement, the night air heavy with the scent of rain. She reached the building, her reflection flickering in the lobby's glass doors as she walked inside.
Her mind was a swirl of thoughts-how to say the words, how to explain that this had to end.
Inside the elevator, she pressed the button for the third floor. The soft hum of the machinery did little to calm the unease growing in her chest.
As the doors slid open with a gentle chime, Lyra stepped out and made her way down the dimly lit corridor, her long hair swaying in sync with her every step.
She reached the familiar wooden door and hesitated for a moment before ringing the bell. The sound was sharp in the silence, cutting through the tension like a knife.
The door swung open, revealing Kyle. His smile was flirtatious, the same one that used to make her heart flutter, but now it only made her feel cold. She gave a half-hearted smile and stepped inside.
The air in the apartment felt suffocating, thick with the weight of unspoken words.
Lyra sat on the couch, motioning for Kyle to join her. He did, his smooth voice filling the space as he asked,
"What is it, Lyra?"
She turned to him, her eyes steady and devoid of the warmth they once held.
"Kyle, let's break up."
The words fell from her lips like stones, sinking into the silence between them. His expression shifted, confusion darkening into something more sinister.
"You're joking, right?" Kyle scoffed, leaning closer as if daring her to take the words back.
"It's not a joke," she replied softly, her smooth tone unwavering.
Kyle's hand reached out, gripping hers with an intensity that bordered on painful. "Why? Am I not enough for you? Did you find someone else?"
Lyra shook her head, her frustration rising. "It's not about someone else. I just don't want to be in this relationship anymore."
Kyle's gaze hardened, his voice dripping with bitterness.
"Oh, I see. Is it Jay? Your chemistry partner? Are you hooking up with him behind my back?"
Lyra's eyes widened in shock, her breath catching in her throat.
"Are you serious?" she demanded, standing up abruptly, her body tense with disbelief.
"Yes, I'm serious," Kyle spat, following her with slow, menacing steps. "You think I wouldn't notice? You think I'm blind?"
Lyra stared at him, her stomach churning. "I would never do that. I just want a break, Kyle."
"A break?" he echoed, his tone mocking. "From me? From what we have?"
"From your toxic nature," Lyra said firmly, her voice sharp with finality. "From you."
Before Kyle could respond, Lyra turned on her heel and bolted out of the apartment, the door slamming behind her.
The sound echoed in the narrow hallway as she stormed down the stairs, her mind racing, heart pounding in her chest.
The air outside was cool, but it did nothing to calm the fire raging within her. She walked quickly, wanting nothing more than to get away from him, from his accusations, from the ugliness that had replaced whatever they once had.
But just as she passed the narrow alleyway between two buildings, a hand gripped her wrist-hard. She was yanked into the darkness, her body slamming against the cold brick wall.
The scent of sweat and anger filled the air, and as her eyes adjusted to the shadows, she saw Kyle's face twisted in fury.
"You can't just walk away from me," he hissed, his voice low and dangerous. "You think you can just leave me like that?"
"Kyle, let go of me!" Lyra struggled, her heart hammering as panic began to creep in. His grip only tightened.
"If I can't have you, then no one else will," Kyle growled, his hand moving to his pocket. The glint of silver caught her eye-a knife, small but deadly, pulled from the folds of his jacket.
Her blood ran cold.
"Kyle, don't..." she breathed, her voice trembling, but his eyes were wild, consumed by something far darker than the boy she had known.
In one swift motion, the blade plunged into her abdomen. Pain shot through her like fire, spreading across her body in waves.
She gasped, her legs buckling beneath her as she collapsed to the ground. The world around her spun, the colors of the night blending into a dizzying haze.
She tried to scream, but her voice was nothing more than a whisper carried away by the wind. Kyle stood above her, his expression cold, detached, as if he had already erased her from his mind.
Lyra's vision blurred as her body grew heavy, the life draining from her with every beat of her heart, same as the blood draining from her body.
The warmth of her blood seeped into the cracks of the cobblestone beneath her, staining the ground like a withered rose petal.
As her eyes fluttered closed, the last thing she saw was the sky- dark, endless, uncaring. And then, there was nothing but silence.
The petals had fallen.
