The sky was orange and pink, the wind gently blowing to blend the sun's colors. The tree line below the sunset reached to take bites of the sky, their sharp pines catching the clouds. It was quiet; other than chef Matzo screaming in the building below. When the screaming started me and Ezra laughed.
"Does she ever just have a moment of peace?" Ezra comments, standing up and balancing on the roof's edge.
Following her lead, I reply; "Apparently not."
"We should probably go before she catch-" I'm cut off by the sounds of footsteps angrily climbing up the stairs to get to the roof.
Ezra gasps, "Run!" She laughs as she now runs down to the other side.
"Hey! Wait up!" I yell, running to catch up with Ezra.
"Ezra and Lyra Carp-swell! You get back here you little twerps!" Chef Matzo yells, running after us. "You two are in big trouble!"
That just makes us both laugh harder, climbing down our escape ladder.
When we make it down, I look up the ladder. Chef Matzo is struggling to climb down the ladder, yelling insults at us. Ezra takes my hand, running to a corn field. The corn field is almost a mess of darkness, the corn stalks strangling each other. We make it to the edge of the corn field when Ezra gets pulled back harshly. Chef Matzo caught us.
"Well, well, look who the cat caught." The woman said, pulling our arms so we stood up.
"I believe you mean 'look what the caught dragged in', miss." Ezra said, looking smug and she let go of my hand. "I feel very disheartened to tell you that your expression was indeed fallacious."
Chef Matzo looks dumbfounded, but not for long, before she scowls. She leans into Ezra's face, touching noses. "Are you mocking me, girl?!"
Ezra backs away, swatting the air around her nose. "Of course not, madam! I was simply broaching your error! And, my, my, may I say that your toothpaste is inefficient!"
Chef Matzo scowls deeper and grabs Ezra by the shirt. "Why you ungrateful little brat-" Before she can finish, I grab Ezra's hand, and run in the direction of the dorms. The old hag yells and yelps, running back into the administration building.
Me and Ezra laugh as we run faster, pulling each other along. The dorm building is just a brick square; windows in a row for each room. Our dorm is on the second floor. We climb up a ladder on the side of the building to get up to our open window, as quickly as we can. When we enter the room, Kelsey, our best friend is laying on my bed. Kelsey gives us a look as Ezra pushes the ladder from the window, closing it.
"Where were you two?!" Kelsey says, stuffing her phone in her pocket.
"As far as old hag Mrs.Matzo knows, here." I say, sitting next to her. I pull out a bag, pulling out old homework and positioning myself comfortably on the bed.
"You'll cover for us, right?" Ezra please. She's laying on her side, trying to hide her heavy breathing.
Kelsey glares. "You two cant just act like you've always been here and expect Mrs.Hargrove to believe it."
There's the sound of heavy knocking on our door, followed by two voices. Mrs.Matzo barges into the room, seething. The headmistress, Mrs.Hargrove follows in after her. The headmistress raises an eyebrow at the girls. Meanwhile the cook is waving around a spatula, pointing it at each of us.
"Mrs.Matzo, the girls look like they've been here."
Ha, take the Kelsey. I told you it was believable.
Mrs.Matzo looks like she's going to blow a fuse, walking further into the room. Mrs.Hargrove followed the cook silently, searching us two like a robot.
"Mrs.Matzo this is the third time this week you claimed the Carp-swells were out past curfew. And every time their in their dorm." Hargrove said, sighing and pushing her glasses further on her nose.
"They-Ezra-" Mrs.Matzo grunts in defeat. "Fine, you win this time. But mark my words, i'll catch you one day, girls."
And with that, Mrs.Matzo walk's out of the room with Mrs.Hargrove on her tail.
The door clicks shut, and the three of us burst out laughing.
"Seriously? Does she think were in a drama TV show?" Ezra says, walking to my bed sitting.
"She probably think's she's the main character." Kelsey adds.
"As if." I remark, putting my bag back under my bed.
Kelsey scoots backwards, leaning against the headboard. Ezra does the same, laying her head on Kelsey's stomach.
"I say we binge 'Cheerleaders' in celebration." Ezra say's. Cheerleaders was a show we were watching, about a cheer-leading team's drama.
"Heck yeah! I need to know whether Heather or Mackenzie started that rumor about Rebecca." I say, leaning against Kelsey's free shoulder.
Ezra starts the show, turning the lights off.
And we stayed like that until morning.
Nova here! This was a short chapter I know! I'm going to try to write every Saturday-Friday new updates. So stay tuned ig!
