John B's father went missing almost a year ago now. Soon after, it became a cold case, labelled as a man who died at sea doing what he loved. But John could never accept that. He believed his dad was out there and would return home. One day.

JJ and I scout our way around Ms Lana's home, following after a quick footed JB. Careful not to make a noise. However, noise is already being made for us. I hear glasses shatter, furniture slammed into walls. Lana screams out in panic.
Debris falls out the window, dusting my brother's hair, and the sound of screeching whiteboards scares me backwards. A twig snaps. We duck below the window sill, John B looks around the corner of the house to see the two men whom shot at us last week, storming outside.
"Shit, get down!" JJ slams a hand over my mouth to quiet my gasp of fear.Jb signals for us to move and we rush into the house as the two broad men speed off on their boat. The boat they chased us with.
"Ms Lana?" John calls out before spotting her in the torn up bathroom, besides the tub. Tears stream down her face in hiccuped sobs and she cries out for us at first sight. I rush to her side, quickly followed by my brothers.
"Do you want us to call the cops?"
"No! No cops, please!" She urges, frantically grabbing onto our arms to stop our movements. "You shouldn't be here."
"That's enough for me." JJ trips over a box as he slowly backs away.
"JJ!" I scold. I tuck Lana's stray hairs behind her ears like my mother used to when trying to calm me down. John crouches down beside us, holding out his father's compass.
He places a shaking hand on her shoulder as her mouth turns agape. "Your husband had this... Do you know anything about it?"
Her horrified expression and tense shoulders cause JB to retract, leaning protectively towards me as Lana sits straighter.
"Don't tell ANYONE you have that! You need to leave. Get out, go!" She yells as we stand up, quickly running back outside, back to the twinkie.

"Did you get a good description of these guys?" Pope presses, begging us to remember something to file a proper police report.
"Burly!" JJ pipes up but Kiara's disappointed glance makes his grin drop.
"The type of guy at my dads garage, you know? Tall, dark hair, stubble." I raise my voice and Pope clicks his fingers, "that could help, bee."
"These guys are like... they're square groupers."
"They're dangerous." John B mumbles, fiddling with the compass.
"And scary." I shudder.
Suddenly, JB clicks his fingers and runs back through the chateau. We all follow after him. He runs his hands across the walls until reaching a door, one that i've never seen opened before. John pulls out a key from his short pocket and shoves it into the lock before hastily turning the doorknob.
Inside is a cluttered mess. Maps and papers and pictures lay sprawled out on all the different surfaces that can be found.
John B picks a frame from the wall and places it on a large wooden desk that can hardly be seen under documents. Different Routledge family members whom the compass has been passed down to seem to have died mysterious and stupid deaths since gaining the device. They decorate the notice board, all connected with one key piece, that compass.
"You've got a death compass." Pope grumbles.
"It's cursed!" JJ exclaims rather excitedly but Kie shuts him up with a dirty look.
"My father used to hide secrets." JB unscrews the golden cap to reveal one simple carved word, written by his father. Redfield.

A large van pulls up in front of the chateau. Two large, muscular, familiar men slam the doors closed and confidently stride inside, destroying everything in their paths.
"Guys... we have a problem!" Kiara rushes to my side besides the window and curses under her breath, quickly drawing the blinds.
"Jayj where's the gun?!" Kie screeches.
"I.. uhm.. left it on the front porch."
"Well go get it!" We all whisper-yell at him in unison.
He slips out the door until yelling outside causes him to rush quickly back in.
"They're in the front porch!" I run my hands through my hair anxiously, desperately trying not to have a breakdown.
Pope scurries to the window, clawing to lift up the ledge but it doesn't budge. John B attempts to barricade the door as the rest of us try to help Pope.
The window scrapes open and we all jump onto the grass below. JJ runs to the chicken coop for cover and we all follow behind, ducking our heads to window sill level to not be seen.
The hen house is dirty and uncomfortable. John B's beloved rooster fluffs his feathers and hoots loudly causing the other chickens to stir. JJ grabs the bird by the scruff of the neck, strangling it. Kie let's out a choked sob and John squeezes her hand at an attempt to comfort her. My entire body shakes in fear as one of the guys slowly draws his gun closer to our hidden huddle. Jay crouches closer towards me and I bury my face in his shoulder so I don't see the man coming forward. So I don't see my friends terrified faces.
"Hey man you comin' or what?" It's almost bittersweet, our luck.

John B drives the twinkie towards Redfield lighthouse, the message he believes his dad left for him in that family heirloom. To go to the infamous lighthouse.
"I dunno about this, man." JJ's arm is strung around my shoulders, still pretty shaken up.
"Feels like your concocting again." Pope agrees but Kiara shakes her head, determined to find John B the answers he's looking for.
After a whole lot of conspiracy theories (kidnapped being the main theme), we pull up beside the gate blocking the lighthouse entrance.
"Look, you guys don't know what it's like to have the person closest to you vanish." JB mutters and we all look down, ashamed, "And to have no idea what happened." He jumps out of the van, leaving us behind to ponder on his words.

"Why am I always assigned as lookout?!" I groan, watching Kie and JB climb the fence, leaving the rest of us behind. Jay and Pope begin playing football with some pebbles and I jump into the front of the Twinkie to play one of Kiara's Bob Marley cds.
However, almost as quickly as the first song ends, we're alerted by police sirens drawing closer. JJ slips into the drivers seat next to me and Pope slams the sliding door shut behind him.
"This wild goose chase is gonna end us up in so much shit." JJ grumbles as he quickly speeds off, leaving behind John B and Kie.
"I dunno, I think it's a bit strange, you know? Mysterious..." I laugh at my brother's scrutinised glare and Pope's mildly terrified glance.

As soon as we get back to the chateau, I change into some new clothes that I keep neatly packed away for when I don't dare go home. Once rigging up a pair of denim shorts and a blue strappy top, I meet the boys at the Heywards' house. Mrs Heyward feeds us some biscuits and scolds her son for his dirtied clothes. She snatches JJ's juul, tossing it away with one hand and gently wacking his head with the other.
I peek out the window to see John B pull up outside, beckoning us to jump into the Twinkie.
"This better be good!"

As it turns out, we had been looking in the wrong place entirely. We were wrong about the lighthouse, Redfield is not about a place it's a person. John B's great great grandmother; Olivia Redfield.
After picking Kiara up from the Wreck, we head to an old graveyard where JB's dead relative's tomb lies. The boys push against it, but the door doesn't budge. However, there is a small cracked hole in the top corner.
"Hey guys, I can fit through that." I volunteer, pointing at the spot, but they all look concerned. "This is about your dad," I say to John B, "And honestly I really don't believe in it but you deserve to know the truth." His eyes soften and I shrug, gently smiling at the boy.
JJ boosts me up and into the cave, like in high school cheerleader movies.
"Remind me what we're looking for?" I call out to them as Kiara hands me a flashlight.
"You'll know when you see it." Vague and unhelpful. I shine the light at the cobwebs and cracks in the old stone wall. Parts crumble away at my feet causing dead moths to fall to the ground in their hopeless cocoons.
I breath through my nostrils; I can do this.
I brush dust away from a hole in the stone and my hand catches on something paper like. An envelope. To Bird is written across it in large scrawled handwriting.
"Holy shit." I whisper to myself as I grab it from the small crevice it was hiding in and throw it out to my friends before pulling myself back out the chamber.
