Chapter 1

Why does 8am come so quickly? Actually here's a better question, why do people need to start work so early? I rub my eyes and grab my phone off my night stand to turn off my alarm. A deep groan escapes my mouth as I sit up and swing my feet over the side of the bed.

"I need a sugar daddy" I mumble to myself as I head for the bathroom and get myself ready for yet another shift at my local coffee shop.

Once I'm dressed in my black slacks and tight black t-shirt, I check myself one more time in the mirror before snatching my keys off the table and starting my 5 block walk to the shop.

The walks were always nice. Today was a little humid and gray out. Little droplets hit my skin as I walked. Shit I should have brought my umbrella. I pulled my phone out and went straight to my messages.

I'll text my girlfriend Tiffany and ask her if she can stop by the shop and drop off an umbrella. She usually stopped in at around 10 to grab a cup of coffee before work. She never responded to my message last night and I tried calling her but it went straight to voicemail.

I assumed she just shut her phone off wanting to take a break from life which I completely understand.

Once I got to the coffee shop I put my key into the door and opened it. My best friend Amber poked her head out from behind the counter and screamed. "Good morning sleepy head" she flew from around the counter and jumped on to me, nearly knocking us both over.

"Why are you so energetic in the morning, Amber?" I said trying to suppress my yawn from coming out. "Why are you so grumpy in the morning Cassie?" She says back in a mocking way as she walks back behind the counter.

She slides a cup in my direction and I already know it's my green tea. She makes it for me every morning because I hated coffee but still wanted something to wake me up. She turned the cup around to reveal a giant smiley face drawn on the side in sharpie.

"Thank you Amber" I said, relaxing my shoulders and taking the cup. The drink warmed my hands and warmed my throat even more as the earthy taste filled my mouth.

"Always Cas...but I don't know how you drink that it tastes like grass shit" she said casually as she poured coffee beans into the coffee machine.

I choked on the tea, not being able to hold my laugh in. "I didn't know grass could shit" I said wiping my lip with the napkin she passed me. "Well if grass could shit it would taste like green tea" she smiled and rolled her eyes.

I wasn't sure how my life would be without Amber in it. She was unintentionally funny but also caring. Sometimes so caring that she would stick her nose deep into my personal business. It used to bother me but overtime I learned that she was naturally an intrusive person and nothing was changing that.

"So um...Tiffany might stop by today" I said, taking a sip to hide my disappointed face. Amber didn't like Tiffany at all and she was very expressive about that.

"Ew okay...and why is she coming, she didn't come all last week, I was hoping you two broke up"

"Amber!" I said with a tone for her to tread lightly. "I'm sorry Cas but she's been acting weird for the past few months and I think she's up to something." She stopped filling the container with ice cubes and looked at me.

"Cassie I have a bad feeling about her and I need you to open your eyes and see the red flags being waved around in your face".

I took a deep sigh and nodded my head. "Ok, but I'm telling you there's nothing to worry about". Amber shrugged her shoulders and we continued to set up the shop in silence for the next 30 minutes.

My shift was going surprisingly well. It's been 5 hours in and no one has complained about their coffee. I looked at the clock waiting for the shift to finally be over in 3 hours. My back was killing me and I already took my thirty minute break.

I saw the coffee shop door swing open and walked over to the register to greet the person and take their order.

My eyes lock onto a woman about 5'4 with silk pressed light brown hair and mesmerizing brown eyes. She wore a dark blue blazer and slacks with heels to match the color. She looked familiar but with the way she dressed I'm sure I saw her before, assuming she worked at one of the many office buildings in the area.

"Hello my name is Cassie, how can I help you?" I asked with a soft tone. Her smile was big and bright and she looked me up and down before speaking.

"Hi, may I please have a coffee, two creams and two sugars" she said in a slightly raspy voice. I started typing it into the computer and then looked back up at her. She was tapping her beautifully painted bottom lip with her index finger as she looked into the display glass full of pastries.

"Which one would you recommend?" She asked, looking up at me with her big brown eyes. She was slightly bent over and I couldn't help but notice how arched her back was.

Ok what the fuck why am I looking at her arched back I have a girlfriend and this woman was clearly a bit older than me.

"My personal favorite is the coffee cake we make with cream cheese. It's to die for" I said smiling, starting to crave a slice myself.

"That sounds so good I'll take a slice of that to go" she said with a slight moan. For whatever reason I felt a throbbing sensation between my legs. I cleared my throat and typed it into the computer. "Ok great I'll have your order ready in a few minutes".

"Take your time sweetheart" she said with a smile and I felt my cheeks heat up.

I bent over by the display and slid the glass door open, grabbing the tongs, I reached inside and grabbed one of the square shaped cakes. "Did you want it warmed up?" I said peeking over the top of the display. She was already staring at me with her hands clasped in front of her.

"Whatever you recommend dear" with that I nodded my head and stuck the square into our microwave. As that was heating up I made her coffee.

I handed her the coffee and the coffee cake that I had placed in a little baggie. "Enjoy I said" with a smile.

"I already did" she said before turning around and walking away with her hips swaying.

It was the end of my shift and I sat with Amber in the coffee shop waiting for Tiffany to bring my umbrella. I would have made a run for it but it started pouring down hard. The rain drops felt like paintball bullets.

"I told you Tiffany wasn't shit" Amber said right as the devil walked in.

"I'm sorry I was late Cassie, I got caught up" she said handing me an umbrella. Amber rolled her eyes and scoffed. "Thank you bab-" I said as I watched a man approach her and snake his arm around her waist. She quickly moved away then looked at him and then at me. "Cassie I can explain" she started but I was too stunned to speak.

"You stupid bitch I knew you had something else going on" Amber stood up and got in Tiffany's face. They argued back and forth but I couldn't hear anything but the sound of my heart beating. Everything around me went blurry then suddenly it came down. The tears that filled my eyes were now dripping onto the table.

I slammed the umbrella down onto the table and ran out the coffee shop. It was 4pm but outside was already dark. Thanks daylight savings. I wiped my tears and walked down the block holding my arms trying to contains some body heat from the freezing rain.

I didn't know where I was going but all I know is that I ended up at a bar...time to drown my pain in a few beers.
