As we stepped off the bus, darkness enveloped us, street lamps flickering to life. A comfortable silence wrapped around us as we walked, Abhimanyu beside me on the road while I strode along the footpath, trying to match his height.
Lost in thought, I gazed at his back, pondering Anu's words from that morning, Was he getting too involved in my life?
My reverie ended abruptly as I stumbled on the pavement. Abhimanyu's swift grasp steadied me. "Hey, be careful," he said, his eyes locked on mine, concern etched on his face.
I inhaled deeply as Abhimanyu's warm fingers wrapped around my arms. Flustered, I swiftly broke free from his hold.
"You okay? Kothao lageni to?" Abhimanyu asked, his brow furrowed.
I shook my head.
"Thank you for walking me home," I said, turning to him.
We stood beside the playground near my house. "I can go home by myself from here," I added, chewing my lip. Secretly, I wanted him to escort me to my doorstep, but I dreaded my brother's potential reaction – and my parents' curiosity.

I collapsed onto my bed after dinner and dialed Anu's number. She answered after just two rings.
"Bolo, sonaaa?" Anu's voice came through, slightly muted as if she was on speaker.
I paused, collecting my thoughts before blurting out, "Abhimanyu walked me home today."
Anu's tone shifted from casual to incredulous. "What did he do?" she exclaimed, her voice now loud and clear.
"Shh, don't shout," I pleaded, laughing.
"Spill the details," Anu demanded, patience lacing her voice.
I took a deep breath. "It was weirdly... comfortable. We barely spoke, but it didn't feel awkward. You know what I mean?" My cheeks flushed as memories of Abhimanyu flooded my mind.
"Ahhhh!" Anu shrieked in excitement, making me chuckle irritably. "Tell me more, more!" she begged, giggling.
"There's nothing more, that's it," I insisted, clamping my mouth shut. My mind began to wander, replaying the moment Abhimanyu's warm fingers wrapped around my arm when I stumbled. I instinctively touched the spot, feeling a tickling warmth. Face-palming, I threw my feet up in the air.
"You're hiding something," Anu accused, her voice laced with skepticism. I could almost see her squinting.
"Nothing, baba," I reassured her.
"Sure naa?" Doubt filled her voice.
"Yes, now bye. I need to sleep," I said hastily before hanging up.
