Ivy
The cold summer night would have been peaceful if not for the threatening doom awaiting us. We knew we wouldn't last much longer. Our soldiers were becoming restless and the opposing army's silence was only putting us more on edge. We knew they would strike soon, we just didn't know when. Fights among our own had begun to break out more frequently as of late and it was only getting worse. We were running low on food supplies, and it was making everyone antsy.
Yet despite the turmoil I couldn't help thinking about the man who I was meeting at midnight. Guilt overwhelmed me at the thought of him and the feeling of drowning streamed through me for but a moment before I shook it off. This wasn't the time to doubt. I had made my decision, and I was going to see it through.
A cold breeze made me shiver. Night had fallen and I was waiting at the mouth of a familiar cave. The moonlight illuminating the damp ground of a once empty cave that had recently become our designated meeting spot. The sound of leaves crunching under heavy military boots sent my heart racing with trepidation. Blood rushed through my veins and a slight flush painted my cheeks.
The towering figure stepped out of the shadows revealing the man that would likely be my downfall. The general of the army set out to kill my people and take our land. To break and crumble and alienate everything left of our once great nation and thus finishing what had been set in motion centuries ago before even our mother's mothers had graced the earth. And yet selfishly he was the love of my life.
