Romeo

The trek up the mountainside wasn't pleasant in the gloomy weather. The rain splattered along the rocky path making it dangerously slippery and blurring my view of the surrounding area. However, the sight greeting me at the top made it all worth it. There she was. A sight for sore eyes. Her hair was a waterfall of midnight and her eyes like deep wells of obsidian, lighting up the darkest corners of my heart. She was a wildflower growing in a crack of stone. Resilient and defiant, with a beauty that thrives despite the harshest conditions. And she was mine.

Once I'd started the bonfire, I settled in with Ivy on the blankets of our makeshift bed. It wasn't often that I got to let my guard down like this so I cherished the moment for as long as I could. I knew I should tell her. She had a right to know, but I didn't want to ruin everything.

The thunder had been roaring all night like even the gods were trying to keep us apart but for a short moment the storm ceased. Here with her, it was like the world stood still. I silently prayed to God that this moment could last forever but I knew my prayers would go unheard.

The silence was heavy. We both knew this couldn't last. We had both lost too many in this war and the somber question we always took great pains to avoid sat between us like a palpable thing in the air. Were either of us going to make it out of this alive? It was a loaded question and we both knew it. The truth was that one of us would live and the other wouldn't. War had come and it was too late to hide from the truth.
"Tomorrow" I began slowly
"At dawn, my army... we're going to strike. Your camp won't stand a chance."
I hoped she could see the unspoken apology in my eyes, but we had both known it would come to this. There was no way around it.
