*percys POV*
Percy had mixed feelings. He was heading to San Francisco with Annabeth, they had both gotten into New Rome University despite all the letters Percy had to submit, they were finally heading to what had seemed so far away before; their future. Although every so often he thought about his mother, his stepfather and his little sister who had been born quite recently. The idea of not being able to be there and see her grow tortured him and made him doubt whether to keep pressing the accelerator. But then there was Annabeth, he could see her smile as they walked the long road to New Rome. They could finally be happy and at peace.
The trip was long, thanks to the fact that Percy's father and the god of the skies were enemies (although they were brothers) if Percy got on a plane his fate would not be less painful than being buried under the ashes, so they had to take 2 days of travel, without traffic, to go from one side of the country to the other. A 2-day trip was enough to discover anyone's personality.
At first they were very excited, they had rented a car so they could go without problems, they listened to music and took turns of six hours to drive. But when the happiness did not last long, the trip was becoming slow and each stop was a blessing for the tired couple.
At one stop, after 27 hours of travel, Annabeth was asleep and Percy got out of the car to go to the bathroom and buy a coffee. He had been driving for 8 hours but Annabeth was very tired so he let her sleep.
It was 4 in the morning when Annabeth woke up and as soon as she saw him she realized that she hadn't slept at all.
-Percy- she said upset but sleepy - you should have woken me up!!!
-Good morning - said Percy trying to soften the situation.
-How are we doing?
-There are 20 hours left
-I was awake all that time??!
-You were very tired
-So? - She stopped for a moment and took a deep breath -Thanks, but now you have to sleep, okay? - She said much more calmly and caressing the hand that Percy placed on the wheel.
As Annabeth drove Percy fell asleep. In his dream he heard a sweet voice that beckoned him, closer and closer Percy could see a two-story white house with a spacious patio outside. Two children were running through the grass, the voice became sweeter and sweeter. But suddenly a boy's voice shouted at him:
-Percy, don't listen, cover your ears- the boy desperately shook him, but Percy couldn't see him.
The image of the dream changed, now a nymph was sitting in a river. She didn't speak but it was obvious that she was dying to do so.
The nymph looked at Percy and making a mocking gesture floated away through the air.
-Seaweed Brains- called a voice behind him, the voice that would always make him turn around, Annabeth's voice- Percy- whispered the sweet voice- we arrived.
Percy woke up just as she said that word. They had arrived at the University of New Rome, their new home for the next few years.
The building was large, made of very neat, smooth, white marble. It had Greco-Roman finishes, something Annabeth would die for. Her girlfriend's shocked face was more beautiful than the building itself.
When all the new students arrived, they were gathered in the domed center. Two girls, a girl and a boy, were calling for order with small microphones that were almost invisible. The girl was a platinum blonde (probably with dye) with brown eyes, and she looked like the pretty but vapid girl who always got attention. The boy was a hunk, but in a bad way. He had a flirtatious laugh, he complimented all the girls and approached them in a suspicious manner.
-Hi everyone - said the girl - I'm Bethany, I'm the daughter of Prosperina...
-Persephone - Annabeth whispered - for the Greeks
- and this is Michell and he's my partner - she pointed at him contemptuously and turned to look at the crowd.
- We're going to divide them up to show them the university - said Michell - in alphabetical order, so the last names from A to M with me and from N to Z with Bethany.
Percy jumped next to Annabeth.
- It seems that we're going together - said Annabeth while laughing.
- Michell, but from X there are no last names and in D there are many - Bethany said through her teeth, although almost everyone heard her.
- It's okay - Michell used a mocking tone for Bethany as if to tell her that she was a pain - From A to... - Percy waited expectantly "to J, to J" - to I with me and the rest with Bethany.
- Damn- said Percy, suppressing another exclamation
- nevermind- said Annabeth in a disappointed tone- we'll see each other later. Send me pictures of your room
- aren't you going to see it? - asked Percy, pretending to be hurt
- later... - he sighed- see you later, seaweed brains.
Percy went with Bethany who was talking to some new girls who seemed like best friends. Kelly, Hanna and Darbie were saying some labels they had in the group. Hanna and Kelly went to the group where Annabeth was, and Darbie stayed in Percy's group.
Bethany saw Percy and her expression changed to one of surprise and a little flirtatious.
-Hi- she said in a flirtatious tone to Percy- are you?
-Percy Jackson- he said uncomfortably
-I'm Bethany, it seems that you're alone, should I join you?- she said while hugging him
Percy moved away
-No, I'm not alone, thanks- he approached a girl he recognized immediately - I'm with my friend, Piper
Piper seemed surprised to see him and greeted him very happily. They walked away
-I saved you, right?- Piper said laughing
-Thank you very much
Percy left there very uncomfortable, he only wanted to be with Annabeth at that moment, and for her to start talking about architecture about all the buildings.
Too bad she was in another group, probably better than him.
