Chapter Ten:

My dad drops me off at Jake's house. Last time I was here, Justin picked me up. Justin...

I snap myself out of it. I don't need to think of Justin. He obviously isn't thinking of me.

I knock on the door, expecting Jake and Ryan to be there. To my surprise, only Jake comes to the door.

"Where's everyone else?" I ask.

"I didn't invite anyone else," Jake says.

I sit on Jake's couch.

"You want something to drink?" He asks. He pulls out a can of beer.

"I'll have water," I say.

Jake laughs and pours me a cup of beer. He hands it to me. I dump the whole cup on him.

He starts laughing, soaked in beer. His laughter makes me laugh.

"What was that for?" He asks, still laughing.

"I wanted water," I laugh. He walks into the kitchen and brings me back a bottle of water.

"Don't throw this on me, too," Jake says, sitting next to me. We have those last, tiny laughs before the room becomes completely quiet.

We just sit there for a couple minutes before Jake asks, "So how's Justin?" His eyes stare into mine. They're a deep blue, and his blonde hair sweeps perfectly across his face...

"J-J-Justin?" I stutter. He nods and smiles. "Oh he's good. He fine. Perfect actually." I bite my lip, knowing that's a terrible lie.

"Juliet, we've been best friends since fifth grade. I know that's a lie. What's wrong?"

I decide to spill my guts and tell him everything. "Justin doesn't talk to me. Andrew is convicted for attempted murder. My dad thinks I'm some drug rat. Pattie is pretty much insane. Paparazzi and news people follow me everywhere I go. The list goes on and on."

I take a few breaths and wait for Jake's response. He doesn't respond, he just kisses my cheek. My heart skips a beat.

"What... was that?" I ask.

"No girl deserves any of that," he sips his beer and stands up. He reaches out his hand, wanting me to put mine in his. I do and he leads me upstairs.

My heart starts racing. I don't know why because it's not like we're going to do anything. I'm still going out with Justin... Right?

Jake and I go into his bedroom and he closes the door behind us. He turns on the TV and Wii and hands me a remote. He closes his curtain.

"So we can see the screen better," he smiles. He can tell I'm nervous of what might happen. Jake puts in Mario Kart. We pick our characters. I'm Toadette and he's Toad.

I'm in first place and Jake is in second. He makes his motorcycle bump mine but I still speed ahead. "No fair!" He exclaims.

He leans over and pushes my remote out of my hands. His face is right in front of mine. "Hey!" I yell-whisper.

His eyes linger in mine for a long time. Finally, we kiss each other. It starts out innocent, but it gets a lot more intense. He starts kissing my neck and carries me to his bed.

His hands move for my shorts and start to unbutton them. I pull away, "Wait, I don't think..."

His eyes stare into mine again, and I stutter into being quiet. We kiss again and he continues taking my shorts off.

We have sex. It's sweet, and perfect. We sit in his bed afterward, switching off between racing and making out. When we hear his garage door opening, we put our clothes back on and run downstairs. He's not allowed to be alone with girls in his room. I wonder why.

We laugh, hug, and kiss one last time before his mom walks in the door.

"Hi Juliet," she grins. I've been friends with Jake for a long time, so his mom and I are pretty close.

"Hi," I wave. She sets down some groceries and Jake and I help her put them away. Soon, she goes upstairs to her room. Jake and I sit on the couch and Jake talks.

"So what about Justin?" He asks.

My heart drops into my stomach. "Uhh I don't know. I like you Jake, but I can't just ditch Justin."

He nods. "I get it, I understand. Juliet, I like you a lot and I'm willing to wait for you."

I smile and we kiss again. My eyes stay wide open this time because now I can't get Justin off my mind.

Eventually after a movie and many kisses my dad picks me up.

"Did you have fun?" My dad asks. It's really awkward because we haven't really been talking too much since the drug bust.

"Yeah," I respond. I slam my car door and buckle up. We drive home and I go straight up to my room.

I open my drawer to get a pencil. I see the magazine with Justin and I on it. A large feeling of guilt comes over me, but I try my best to shake it off. I get a pencil and start doodling on a piece of stretch paper.

I get out my textbook and try and focus on homework. I've never been the best at that, but especially now, I can't to save my life. I stare at the picture of my mom for a while and feel the sense of loss that sent me in the downward spiral in the first place.

I look at my ceiling and start crying. "Why did you have to take her, God?" I throw my pillow at the ceiling. I can't be strong without her. "She's all I had!" I throw everything in my room in anger towards the ceiling.

After everything is all over, my anger turns into sadness. I sit on my floor and start crying even harder. I punch the floor.

After crying for about an hour, my eyes hurt because they are out of tears. My dad knocks on my door. "Are you okay?"

"No," I respond and wipe the tears from my eyes. He opens the door with a hand behind his back.

"I have a surprise," he says. I don't look up at him. "Juliet?"

"What," I say.

"So lately there's been a lot of drama and stress here. I've saved up my money, and we're going on vacation."

"Where?" I say, feeling a little better.

"We're going to Hawaii. Pack your bags, we're leaving Friday."

"But I have school on Friday. And tests and homework-"

My dad laughs. "I called all your teachers and they said they understand. They know it's stressful in your shoes. They're going to excuse any assignments you miss. I'm glad you care though."

I hug my dad. "Thanks dad, for everything."

He kisses my head. "You're welcome."
