I stayed on the rooftop longer than I should have, trying to will my body into submission. The cool night air barely helped. The fire Blaze had sparked still burned hot, too close to the surface. The longer I stayed up here, gripping the rough stone beneath my palms, the more I felt control slipping through my fingers.
Thirty minutes. That’s how long it took to feel remotely composed, enough to leave without doing something reckless.
When I finally descended back down, I avoided looking in Blaze’s direction. I couldn’t afford to even glance at her. My body betrayed me, hardening uncontrollably the second she crossed my mind, and I wasn’t about to lose control in front of her—or anyone.
Ethan, of course, couldn’t help himself. “What took you so long?” he asked, more curious than concerned.
“Had a call,” I lied, keeping my voice steady. It was the easiest way to brush him off. There was no way I was explaining myself right now.
I turned to Ava instead, my focus locked on her as if she was the only person in the room. “I’m ready to help,” I said, voice firm. I wouldn’t let myself slip—not now. Blaze didn’t exist to me in that moment. I had to keep her out of my mind, out of sight, or else I wouldn’t be able to control what came next.
Ava nodded, eagerly going over the details of what she needed. I stayed locked into the conversation, still refusing to look at Blaze, even though I could feel her presence, her gaze, burning into me.
