Ten years later....

Melissa's POV:

Drinnnng drinnnnnng..... i hear my alarm clock go off at 6.30AM

'Five more minutes' i muffle into the pillow, i was sleeping so well.

Then i hear my mom barge in 'wake up honey, or you're gonna be late' she says, then she kisses me on the forehead and leaves, then i decide to stand up. I open the curtains and see the rainy, depressing sky of Denmark.

Luckily, I live close to school, and I can just run there, but I still find it kinda depressing. While i'm in the middle of doing my makeup, I check the clock:

7:55. well, shit. I hurry up finishing my mascara and grab my jacket and school bag, then I say goodbye to my parents before running down the stairs and out of the building. I quickly check the clock and it says that it's 8.04, 1 minute. runrunrun. I run across the street and into the school property, through the hallway and into my class, look at the clock, 8.05,

I'm just on time!

I sit on my chair beside my friend Carolina. 'I hate Mondays' she says.

'We just gotta make it till Friday' i reply.

Then the Maths teacher walks in.

'Today we're preparing for the exam that you will have on Wednesday'

Somebody prepare my funeral.

After the math class, me and Carolina go to lunch. We get our food and sit at the table with our friends, Claire Stevens and Josie Williams, the best friend duo since first grade. As we begin talking, i feel a presence behind me, i turn around to look and there they are, the popular girls,

Millie Meyers, Maya Miller and Emily Campbell, they sit next to Carolina.

'Hey Anderson' Millie looks down at Carolina's shoes, 'wow, you're wearing Vans? They look rather...'

'Expired' Maya adds, and they all three laugh.

I look at Carolina, she's looking at her food.

'If we have to talk about expired things, Maya, check your foundation's expiration date, like, are you wearing foundation or icing? 'Cause that's a lot of layers' I say, because nobody talks to my best friend like that!

Maya rolls her eyes, while Emily is trying not to laugh.

Then, Millie stands up, takes both her friends by the arms and leaves.

'Somebody gotta tell that bitch' Josie says.

Almost everyday, while walking home from school, I think about my home country, Italy, and how life would've been if we hadn't ever moved to Denmark. I could've had more time with my grandpa before he passed, what if i didn't have to learn a completely new language as a five year old? What if i wouldn't have lost contact with all my friends. I still talk to my old best friend, Michael. I wasn't really getting along with a lot of people in my class back then, so I became friends with him and another girl called Eliza.  I think about my childhood a lot, I think I had a great childhood.

But then, i had to move, my dog died some months later, i don't know how.

I enter the apartment and nobody is home, my parents both work until 5.

My dad still works as a painter, he found a job out of town. My mom works at a nursing home, she works with old people who have Dementia.

I pick up my MacBook and enter Netflix, but I've seen a lot of those movies, so I choose to rewatch my favorite movie: The Tearsmith.

I sit back, staring at the screen, but my mind isn't on the movie. It's drifting again—to Italy, to how much has changed since we left, to all the things I miss. I wonder what my life would've been like if we'd stayed. Would I still be close with my old friends? Would I have found a way to say goodbye to Grandpa properly?

The raindrops start hitting the window harder, matching the heaviness that's in my chest. Denmark feels so far from everything familiar, like I'm stuck in this place where nothing quite fits. Even after all these years, I still feel like a stranger sometimes.

With a sigh, I close my laptop and look out at the gray, rainy sky. Maybe tomorrow will be different. Maybe. But for now, all I can do is wait—and hope that this place will eventually feel like home.
