With a clearer mind and a heart full of determination, Cooper decided it was time to confront Isabel and mend their broken relationship. He hoped that the time apart would give them both the clarity they needed. As he drove to Isabel's house, he replayed their last conversations in his head, trying to find the right words to bridge the gap that had formed between them.
But when he arrived, Isabel's family informed him that she had left for Manila with Chris. The words hit him like a cold wave crashing over him, leaving him breathless. "When did she leave?" he asked, his heart sinking.
"This morning," Isabel's father replied, a hint of sadness in his voice. "She said she needed to clear her mind. I think it's for the best, Cooper."
Cooper nodded absently, feeling the weight of despair settling in his chest. It felt like the final nail in the coffin of their relationship. They had been so close, and now she was gone-off with someone else, someone who could give her what he couldn't. As he drove away from Isabel's house, anger mixed with heartache, he felt utterly defeated.
That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting golden hues across the sky, Cooper found solace on the back porch of Scarlette's mansion. She joined him with two steaming mugs of tea, the aroma calming him slightly. They sat in silence for a moment, sipping their drinks and watching the fireflies dance in the twilight.
"Hey," Scarlette finally broke the silence, her voice gentle. "You okay?"
Cooper sighed, the frustration evident on his face. "I went to see Isabel today. She's gone... to Manila. With Chris," he said, bitterness coating his words. "I can't believe she would just run off like that."
Scarlette's heart sank at the mention of Chris. She knew the truth but felt paralyzed, trapped in her own feelings. "I'm sorry, Cooper. That must be really hard for you."
"Hard doesn't even begin to cover it," he replied, running a hand through his hair. "I thought maybe we could work things out, but now it just feels like it's over. I don't know what I did wrong."
Scarlette's heart ached for him, but a part of her was conflicted. She wanted to reach out and comfort him, to be the one he turned to in times of need. "You didn't do anything wrong, Cooper. Sometimes people just... change," she said, her voice soft and soothing.
Cooper looked at her, his brown eyes filled with vulnerability. "I thought we had something special. I was ready to propose to her, Scarlette. I thought she was the one." He paused, taking a deep breath, and looked away into the darkening woods. "But now? I don't know if she even cared about me at all."
Scarlette felt a pang of guilt pierce through her. She wanted to tell him the truth about Isabel's condition, to explain why Isabel had pulled away. But the words stuck in her throat. What if it pushed Cooper away? What if he blamed her for not speaking up sooner?
"I just feel so lost," Cooper continued, his voice dropping to a whisper. "I thought I was doing everything right, but now..."
Scarlette wanted to reach out, to comfort him. She wanted to tell him that she was here for him, that they could figure this out together. But the fear of rejection held her back. Instead, she chose her words carefully. "You're not alone, Cooper. You have me. We can talk about it, and you can vent if you need to. Just don't shut me out."
"Thanks, Scarlette," he replied, a small smile breaking through his gloom. "I appreciate that. I really do. It just feels like everything is falling apart."
They sat in silence for a while, each lost in their thoughts. Scarlette wanted to reach out to him, to tell him that she cared deeply, that she was ready to step in where Isabel had left off. But she couldn't shake the feeling that revealing Isabel's secret would only complicate things further.
Finally, Scarlette took a deep breath and decided to take a chance. "Cooper, if you want to talk about something else... about how you're feeling, I'm here for you," she said, her voice steady, yet filled with longing.
He turned to her, his eyes searching hers. "I don't want to burden you, Scarlette. You've been through so much yourself."
"It's not a burden if I want to be here for you," she insisted, her heart pounding. "Please."
Cooper studied her for a moment, and she could see the storm of emotions churning in his mind. "Okay," he finally said, and for the first time, a glimmer of hope sparked in his eyes. "I guess I just need to know if I can still find happiness. If it's even possible after everything."
Scarlette's heart swelled with a mix of love and determination. "You will find happiness, Cooper. I believe that with all my heart. Just don't close yourself off. I'm here, and I care about you. More than I probably should," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
He looked at her, and in that moment, she could see the walls he had built beginning to crack. "You mean a lot to me too, Scarlette," he said quietly. "I just don't know what that means right now."
"I think it means we take one day at a time," she suggested, a small smile playing on her lips. "And we figure it out together."
The tension between them softened as they shared a small moment of understanding, the night air filled with unspoken promises and the warmth of friendship beginning to bloom into something deeper. Scarlette felt the weight of her guilt lift slightly, and though she still held back the truth about Isabel, she knew that she would find a way to share it. For now, she wanted to be there for Cooper in any way she could, even if it meant being selfish with her own feelings.
