Scarlette stood by the window of her room, the soft afternoon light filtering through the curtains, casting gentle shadows on the floor. The vibrant hues of the sunset painted the sky in breathtaking oranges and purples, yet her heart felt heavy, burdened by an unshakeable ache. From her vantage point, she had a clear view of the road that led to the small town. Every time a car approached, her heart raced, but it was not Cooper she anticipated; it was Isabel.

The news of Cooper's hurried trip to Manila had reached her through the grapevine, leaving her with a mix of emotions she struggled to untangle. Watching him leave felt like watching a piece of her heart go with him. Scarlette had always cared for Cooper deeply, yet now, as she stood in the silence of her room, it was painfully clear that he had chosen to pursue his unresolved feelings for Isabel.

With every passing hour, Scarlette found herself replaying the moments of their time together. The laughter they shared, the quiet conversations under the stars, and the fleeting glances that lingered longer than necessary. She had hoped that their connection would blossom into something more, yet reality had dealt her a cruel hand. Isabel's illness hung in the air like a dark cloud, overshadowing everything.

A deep sigh escaped her lips as she recalled the moment she learned about Isabel's hospitalization. Her heart twisted with empathy for Isabel but throbbed with a sense of helplessness. Scarlette understood that Isabel needed Cooper, just as much as Cooper needed her. Scarlette's presence, once a source of comfort for him, now felt like an obstacle. She had become an unwitting spectator in a narrative that didn't include her.

The door creaked open, and her grandmother, Lola Victoria's absence was felt acutely in the quiet of the house. "Scarlette, dear, are you alright?" a familiar voice broke through her thoughts.

"Yeah, I'm fine," Scarlette replied, forcing a smile as she turned away from the window. "Just thinking."

"Thinking about Cooper?" Linda asked gently, taking a seat beside her. The concern in the woman's eyes was palpable, yet Scarlette knew better than to burden her with the weight of her heartache.

"It's nothing. Just the usual," Scarlette said, her voice steady, even though her heart felt like it was being squeezed in a vice.

Linda nodded, sensing the unspoken truth behind Scarlette's words. "You know, dear, sometimes love is complicated. It doesn't always go the way we hope it will."

Scarlette's throat tightened as she nodded, feeling the sting of tears threatening to spill. "I just wish things were different. I wish he could see me for who I am and not just as someone in Isabel's shadow."

"But you're not just in her shadow. You have your own light, Scarlette. Don't forget that," Linda encouraged softly.

"I know, but right now, it feels like I'm losing him," Scarlette admitted, the floodgates threatening to open.

"Love is about being there for someone, even when it hurts," Linda said wisely. "And it sounds like he cares deeply for you too, even if he's focused on Isabel right now. Sometimes, you have to let people go and find their own way."

Those words resonated with Scarlette, but they did little to ease her pain. She felt as if she was standing at the edge of a cliff, watching the tide pull away from the shore, and with it, all her hopes of building something beautiful with Cooper.

Days turned into a blur as Scarlette busied herself with work at the banana plantation, trying to drown her sorrows in the rhythms of her daily routine. Each morning she woke up early, greeted by the chirping of birds and the golden rays of sunshine. She toiled under the sun, pouring her heart into the tasks at hand, yet no amount of physical labor could soothe the turmoil brewing inside her.
