"Wait, Sling, you were serious about the whole Boombox employment thing? I don't think labor is a very good coping strategy..." Shuriken asked once Slingshot had finished up the first order of the day.

"Sure it is! Baking always helps me calm down whenever I'm stressed!"

"Slingshot, if I could bake, I wouldn't be going to this cafe every morning." Boombox argued, still a bit tired.

"...Dish duty it is, then!"

"That's even worse!"

Boombox couldn't believe all that had happened in the span of an hour. His apartment had been raided and was probably gone now, Bio had been kidnapped, he slept under a bridge (which was surprisingly comfortable even with the fear of falling), and now he was working at his friend's cafe, getting sorry looks from the Thieves' Den siblings as well as the customers. Somehow, he never got recognized. He wasn't complaining, though. This, aside from when he first met Bio, was the only time he didn't want to be noticed.

Placing the last dish from the first wave on standby to be used, Boombox looked around. Sling's cafe was PACKED, even though it had only been around seven minutes since it opened. He estimated there were about thirty demons inside the place, not counting the ones outside at the patio tables. Maybe his job as a DJ wasn't so stressful after all... wait.

His job.

Boombox whipped out his phone, immediately checking his calendar. If he missed something important, he would be done for. He'd spent so much time with Bio the last few days that he'd forgotten he only had one day off. Boombox hadn't worked for five.

Just as he expected, Boombox had missed three gigs. Small ones, but still gigs nonetheless. He felt awful for dropping out on them, zero notice. He sighed and resumed cleaning once the second wave of unwashed dishes came around. "Too late now..."

Subspace was torturing someone as per usual when he heard the Biografts. They had returned.

His victim still screaming in agony, Subspace happily skipped out of the laboratory room he was in and met his "kids" in the next room over.

"You all are back! Did you get 9349?! Oh, who am I kidding! Of course you did!!"

The Biografts all spoke in unison. "INDEED, CREATOR. HOWEVER, WE COULD NOT FIND THE MUSICIAN."

"Oh, so he wants to play hide-and-seek like his friend, eh?! Fine, I'll play along!" Subspace cackled. The more test subjects, the better. He could hear the sobbing and anguish now...

He snapped out of his fantasies. "Ah, right! Where's 9349?! I need to make sure the Playgrounders didn't do anything to it!" Surprisingly, it didn't take long for Subspace to identify the Biograft he was looking for. The greenish grey pin that had spawned on its horn a few days before stood out quite a bit among the glowing orange surrounding it.

Shooing the other Biografts away, Subspace checked #9349 for a hidden tracker and any major changes. Everything looked fine. "Hah! I really shouldn't have put the Playgrounders up to such high standards! They can't do anything to you, can they..." Subspace gave the still-powered-off Biograft a little head pat before once again skipping to the room he was last in. No time for a full examination now.

He had to test out some new methods!

"Boombox, are you okay over there?" Vine Staff asked when the work day had finally ended. They were supposed to be heading out now, but Boombox looked stuck on something.

"Yup, I'm fine, guys, you don't have to wait for me! Just give me the keys and I'll lock the door on my way out!" Boombox weakly smiled at his coworkers (well, his current coworkers. He wasn't planning on working at Sling's cafe forever).

Slingshot, Shuriken, and Vine Staff quickly exchanged glances of mild concern before Slingshot tossed Boombox the keys to the establishment. "Alright... just stay safe, BB! Don't let the Biografts bite!" Slingshot said playfully in an attempt to cheer his friend up. It looked like it worked, but Boombox still seemed a bit off.

"He's probably just tired... Let's leave him alone for a bit." Vine Staff noticed Slingshot's unease. "Yeah, Sling! You can call him, right?" Shuriken chimed in as the three roommates began walking back to their house.

"I guess I can. Just don't want him to end up like his apartment, is all! Must be tough being a Playgrounder that's friends with a Biograft..."

"I will say, when you first told us that Boombox and Biograft were friends, I thought you were joking. I mean, I knew Boombox was... open to making new friends, but Biograft? That Subspace guy must be fuming!" Shuriken had a point. Slingshot remembered Boombox saying that demons from Blackrock gave him "bad vibes", so what was the sudden appeal?

What were the consequences?

Boombox, like he said he would, closed up shop with Slingshot's keys. The time was 10:00 PM, just like it was when the hangout yesterday ended. Now, however, the atmosphere wasn't content and cheery. Now, the sky, instead of a comforting dark blue with twinkling stars and fluffy clouds, was a dull, emotionless grey. Now, he had no home to call his, and no friendly Biograft to return to said home with.

Now, instead of planning to sleep in his nice warm bed, the DJ was planning to go to Blackrock.

What did he have to lose?
