The sun peeked through the curtains, casting soft light across Rei's bedroom. She blinked at the ceiling, a sense of dread pooling in her stomach as memories of last night flooded back. The party had started as a celebration, but it had turned into a silent film where she was both the spectator and the unwilling participant.
Rei pushed herself up, rubbing her temples. She could still hear the echoes of laughter and the way Mingyu had looked at the other girl, the way he'd leaned in a little too close, his smile a little too wide. She didn't want to feel this way—she didn't want to doubt him. But the feeling had settled in, heavy and unshakeable.
With a sigh, she swung her legs over the side of the bed and took a deep breath. She needed to clear her head, to get some fresh air. Maybe a walk would help.
After a quick shower and dressing in her favorite comfortable clothes, Rei stepped outside into the crisp morning air. She welcomed the chill, letting it envelop her as she began to stroll through her neighborhood. The familiar sights brought a sense of calm, but her mind remained restless.
As she walked, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out to see a message from Mingyu: Hey! Can't wait to see you later. Got something special planned!
A small smile broke through her worry, but it was fleeting. She tapped out a quick response, Looking forward to it!, and put her phone away. But the excitement that should have bubbled inside her was muted. What was this "something special" he had planned? Part of her wanted to believe it was a genuine attempt to reconnect, but another part couldn't help but feel skeptical.
Later that day, Rei found herself at a café, nervously tapping her foot against the floor as she waited for Mingyu to arrive. She had arrived early, needing the time to gather her thoughts and calm her racing heart. It was a popular spot, bustling with energy, but all she could think about was what had happened the night before.
Mingyu strolled in, and the world around Rei faded as she focused solely on him. He wore a casual, effortless style that somehow made him even more attractive. He spotted her and waved, his smile brightening the room.
"Hey, beautiful!" he exclaimed, leaning down to place a kiss on her cheek.
"Hey," she replied, trying to match his enthusiasm but feeling a weight pressing on her chest.
They settled into their seats, and Mingyu began to talk about his day, his words flowing with excitement. Rei nodded along, but her mind wandered, replaying the scenes from the party.
"Everything okay?" Mingyu asked suddenly, his brow furrowing as he studied her face.
"Yeah, of course," she lied, forcing a smile.
Mingyu's eyes sparkled with mischief. "I was thinking we could do something fun tonight. Maybe go out to that new karaoke place?"
"Sounds great," she replied, her stomach twisting. Fun. Did he really mean it, or was he just trying to distract her?
Just then, Joshua walked into the café. Rei felt a rush of warmth at the sight of him, a stark contrast to the tension that filled her with Mingyu. He waved and made his way to their table, a friendly smile plastered on his face.
"Hey, guys! Mind if I join?" Joshua asked, glancing between them.
"Not at all!" Mingyu grinned, waving him over.
Rei felt a flutter of nerves, but she was also grateful for the distraction. Joshua took a seat, and the conversation flowed effortlessly, but she couldn't shake the feeling of tension hanging in the air.
After a few moments, Mingyu excused himself to grab another drink, leaving Rei and Joshua alone.
"So, how have you been?" Joshua asked, his tone light but his gaze serious.
Rei hesitated, unsure of how to respond. "Just... trying to figure things out, I guess."
Joshua nodded, a flicker of understanding crossing his face. "Life can get complicated, huh?"
"Yeah," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "Mingyu and I... I don't know. I'm starting to feel like I don't really know him at all."
Joshua's expression softened, but he didn't press. Instead, he offered a small smile. "Well, just remember, it's okay to take a step back and reevaluate things."
Rei opened her mouth to reply, but just then, Mingyu returned, a beaming smile on his face as he settled back into his chair. The moment felt fragile, and Rei's heart raced as she caught Joshua's gaze, a silent conversation passing between them.
As the afternoon wore on, the laughter and chatter filled the café, but the cracks in Rei's heart deepened. She glanced at Mingyu, who was animatedly discussing his plans, and she wondered if she was ready to confront the truth hidden beneath his charming exterior.
