The bustling campus of Kōei University was alive with the sounds of students chatting and the smell of freshly brewed coffee wafting from the nearby café. It was the start of a new semester, and the energy was palpable.
Kuroo Tetsuro strutted through the courtyard, his trademark smirk firmly in place. Beside him, Bokuto Koutaro was animatedly discussing their plans for the upcoming semester, his enthusiasm infectious.
"—and then we can totally dominate the intramural volleyball league! I mean, with you and me, how can we not?" Bokuto said, his wild hair bouncing as he gestured wildly.
Kuroo chuckled, nudging his friend playfully. "As long as you remember to pay attention this time and not just stare at the ball like it's a rare Pokémon, we should be fine."
Bokuto pouted dramatically. "Hey, it's called passion! And speaking of passion, have you seen Daishou's latest post on social media? It's like he's trying to start a fan club for himself!"
Kuroo rolled his eyes. "If by 'fan club,' you mean 'annoyance brigade,' then sure. But let's face it, Suguru's got enough fans with his inflated ego."
Just then, Daishou Suguru appeared, sauntering over with an air of confidence that was almost palpable. His eyes locked onto Kuroo, and a playful smirk tugged at his lips. "Speaking of egos, did you manage to scrape yours off the floor after last semester's finals? Or do I need to help you with that?"
Kuroo shot back without missing a beat, "You mean the finals you barely passed? I'm pretty sure you dropped more points than your grades, Daishou."
"Funny. You should add 'stand-up comedian' to your resume," Daishou retorted, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Maybe you could even make a living off it—though I doubt anyone would pay to hear your tired jokes."
Bokuto laughed, his booming voice attracting glances from nearby students. "You two should just kiss already and get it over with!"
Both Kuroo and Daishou turned to Bokuto, their expressions a mixture of shock and annoyance. "What?!" Kuroo exclaimed, face flushing with disbelief.
Daishou smirked, clearly enjoying the chaos. "Yeah, Bokuto, let's not encourage that kind of behavior. It's already embarrassing enough having to deal with Kuroo's constant need for validation."
Kuroo shot Daishou a glare. "You're just jealous I can pull off this look effortlessly. Not everyone can rock a 'perpetually confused' style like you."
"Hey!" Daishou protested, feigning offense, but his smile belied the irritation. "At least I don't look like I just rolled out of bed every day!"
Bokuto burst into laughter, thoroughly entertained by their banter. "You guys are like a rom-com waiting to happen! Just admit you have a crush on each other already!"
As Kuroo opened his mouth to retaliate, a familiar voice chimed in. "Can we not turn the courtyard into a circus, please?"
Konoha Akinori, Daishou's roommate, approached with an amused expression, shaking his head. He adjusted his glasses, glancing at the chaos unfolding before him. Konoha had been trying to maintain his focus on his studies, but the antics of his roommate and Kuroo always drew him in.
"Good luck with that," Kuroo said, grinning at Konoha. "You're living with a certified troll."
Konoha shrugged, a smirk playing on his lips. "I've learned to pick my battles. If I can survive Daishou's loud debates, I can survive anything."
"Loud debates?" Daishou scoffed. "You make it sound like I'm trying to solve world hunger. I just enjoy winning arguments."
Konoha rolled his eyes but couldn't suppress his smile. "Right. Like your argument over whether pineapple belongs on pizza? You're still wrong, by the way."
"That's the first intelligent thing I've heard all day," Daishou shot back, but his voice was playful.
As the banter continued, Kuroo couldn't help but notice the way Bokuto leaned closer to Konoha, their conversation flowing easily, as if they had known each other for years. There was something warm about it, and for a brief moment, Kuroo felt a twinge of envy.
"Alright, enough of this," Kuroo said, interrupting his own thoughts. "We need to focus on important matters—like when we're going to have that match against your team, Suguru."
"Is that the best you've got? Trying to distract me with volleyball?" Daishou challenged, a playful glint in his eye. "Good luck. I'll be sure to bring the trophy to remind you of your defeat."
"Keep dreaming," Kuroo retorted, crossing his arms defiantly.
As they bantered back and forth, Konoha and Bokuto exchanged glances, a silent understanding passing between them. Something about the playful rivalry and the sparks flying felt... right.
And as the sun dipped low in the sky, casting a warm glow over the campus, Kuroo and Daishou's bickering seemed to fade into the background, leaving room for a different kind of tension—a tension that hinted at the possibility of more, lingering just beneath the surface, waiting for the right moment to ignite.
To be continued...
