Moving to Italy wasn't a plan I had for the future, nor did I want it to be one. Italy was a gorgeous country, to say the least. But I loved my life in Seattle, I had the friends that I grew up with, a once-loving family, and I knew everyone on the block. And most importantly, I spoke a language that was spoken by nearly everyone in Seattle.

My Italian wasn't horrible or anything, but it wasn't at a level of fluency that I could feel fully comfortable living in Italy.

Scratch that the island I was moving to wasn't even a tourist city like Rome or Milan, but a small island named Marina Piccola. Who knows who would speak English there?

Me and my adopted brother Jordan, would be living peacefully in our old lifestyle in Washington state. But our adoptive parents had been arrested for multiple charges, like tax fraud, stealing, etc.

Jordan and I had 2 difficult yet not-so-difficult questions, go back to foster care and possibly be separated for life. Or we could stay with our adopted Grandmother, Maria, in Marina Piccola.

So us not wanting to separate, because at this point, we were all each other had, we decided to choose the second option and move to Marina Piccola. A small Italian island.

" Do you think she'll ever be here?" Jordan asked, staring at his phone. I secretly looked over his phone to see him looking at Instagram stories from his former teammates.

He had missed Seattle the most, or should I say his team? He had been on a U-17 team just at the age of 14 and scored many points each game. Now he was back at the start.

" Just be patient, she'll show up eventually," I mumbled the last word softly so I seemed confident in my answer. Who would expect it to take so long to travel to one dock?

" Look is that her?" Jordan asked looking ahead at an older lady with blonde-gray hair in a bob cut. For an older lady, she definitely had a good sense of fashion that I would mistake her for being around 47. Unless she was? Considering our parents adopted us when we were 5, and they were 20.

" I think so, no one else is here." I shrugged and hopped off the fence, luckily not falling back into the water in the process.

" She looks so young." Jordan wondered out loud, I looked at him with a " shut up" expression before he said more, in case she had heard.

" Ciao ragazzi! Tecnicamente sono tua nonna, ma puoi chiamarmi Maria. Benvenuti a Marina Piccola!" She spoke to us, and I understood around half of what she had said. But not enough to respond accurately.
( Hi guys! Technically I'm your grandmother, but you can call me Maria. Welcome to Marina Piccola.)

" Ciao! Sono Alexia e questo è Jordan. Scusa il mio italiano non è bueno." I hesitantly responded, I didn't know whether to respond in English or Italian. But to sound like I was trying, I knew it would be better to speak in the minimal Italian I knew.
( Hi! My name is Alexia and this is Jordan. Sorry, my Italian is not good. )

" Oh it's okay don't worry Alexia. And you're Jordan?" She asked looking at my brother who stood there with no clue of what we were talking about considering he spoke 0 Italian.

" Yes ma'am, I'm Jordan. Thank you for allowing us to stay with you." He replied to Maria. I didn't know if I should call her grandma or not, because she didn't know us until really last week, and she didn't seem like the type to care.

" No problem, shall we go now? I know you two had a long trip here so I wouldn't want you both to go without sleep for any longer." She happily said, guiding us over to her car. Me and Jordan both exchanged happy looks, she didn't seem mean or strict.

" That would be great," I answered and got into the car. She must have had a good amount of money, considering she had a Porsche. Which was not a cheap type of car.

"Your car is really nice. If you don't mind me asking, what do you do?" Jordan inquired, admiring the fancy buttons and sophisticated interior design inside the car.

" No it's not disrespectful to ask, I'm the local doctor, for any age." She went on the explain everything she has to deal with, and many different stories, some that sounded crazy to be real.

Somehow the car ride didn't seem awkward at all, we were all talking normally as if we had known Maria and she had known us for ages.

" We're here! Here's your- what's the word in English? Roof?" She guided me to a light pink room, with a window facing the Mediterranean Sea, it was gorgeous, to say the least.

" Do you mean room?" I asked her, I hoped to not sound mean or disrespectful with my tone, as my adoptive parents would scold me for that often.

" Yes I do! Well, it seems like you're tired and I don't want to bother you anymore, goodnight Alexia!" She clapped her hands together and left down the stairs. I gave her a slight smile and responded before closing the door and letting myself get used to my new room.

It was so difficult to be here. I loved Maria, she was fun, kind, and hilarious but I missed my parents a little. Although they turned out to be bad people, they still cared for me and Jordan—more than our biological parents did.

Jordan's room was next to mine, so I gave him 4 knocks on the wall beside my bed, hoping he would hear me. When we were younger and nervous about something we would knock using Morse code to communicate. Sure it may have been a little rusty but as long as we could try to understand half of what the other was saying.

" I'm scared." I knocked out on the wall, slowly so that he would be able to understand correctly.

" For what?" I couldn't even hear him but I knew he would be thinking I was crazy for feeling scared about school. Even if the kids weren't nice to me, we still had each other. That's what siblings are for after all.

" School." I regretted knocking that out for that exact reason.

" Don't worry. You have me. Now sleep please." He lastly knocked it out, and I had no choice but to stop knocking. It was a good idea to get sleep, but I couldn't. The outside was far too beautiful to not look at, and the peaceful noises of the air swirling around outside.

But I knew I would regret it in the morning, going to a brand new school with less than 5 hours of sleep would just be embarrassing at this point.
