The sickbay was quiet, the hum of medical equipment barely audible as Tendi finished organizing the supplies. Her mind wandered as she moved through her routine, but something felt different today—an unusual tension in the air that she couldn't quite place.
Before she could think too much about it, Doctor T'Ana appeared in the doorway, her fur slightly bristling and her tail flicking with unmistakable agitation. Tendi straightened up, smiling brightly as always. "Doctor! Is everything alright?"
T'Ana didn't answer right away. Instead, she looked at Tendi with a sharp, calculating gaze, her eyes narrowing in a way that suggested she was carefully considering her next words. Tendi shifted slightly under the scrutiny, her antennae twitching.
Finally, T'Ana spoke, her voice low and rough around the edges. "Come into my office, Tendi. We need to talk."
Tendi blinked, the shift in tone catching her off guard. "Sure, Doctor," she said quickly, following T'Ana into her small office off to the side of the sickbay. The door closed behind them with a soft hiss, and Tendi suddenly found herself alone with T'Ana in the more intimate space.
The tension between them was palpable now. T'Ana moved with restless energy, her claws tapping lightly on the desk as she circled around it, her tail swishing in a manner that betrayed her irritation—or perhaps something more.
Tendi swallowed, her usual bubbly demeanor faltering slightly under T'Ana's intense stare. "What's going on, Doctor? Is something wrong?"
T'Ana let out a short, sharp breath before turning to face Tendi directly. Her eyes were piercing, but there was something different in them—a rawness, an intensity that Tendi hadn't seen before. "I noticed the way you've been looking at me," T'Ana said bluntly, her voice edged with frustration but also with something more vulnerable. "And I can't ignore it anymore."
Tendi's cheeks flushed a deep green, her eyes widening at the accusation. "I—what? I haven't—" she stammered, but T'Ana cut her off with a wave of her hand.
"Don't play innocent with me," T'Ana growled, though there was a hint of softness beneath her gruff tone. "You've been watching me. And right now... I need someone to help me through something. I'm in heat, Tendi. And Shaxs isn't around to deal with it."
Tendi's breath caught in her throat at the admission. Her heart raced, a mix of surprise and something else—something warm and thrilling—coursing through her. T'Ana was being more direct than usual, but there was an unusual vulnerability to her that Tendi couldn't ignore.
"I—um..." Tendi trailed off, her mind spinning as she tried to process what T'Ana was saying. Heat. It was a biological necessity for Caitians, something Tendi had read about in her medical studies, but she never thought she'd be involved in something like this.
T'Ana sighed, her posture relaxing just a fraction as she took a step closer to Tendi. "I'm not forcing you into anything, Tendi," she said, her voice quieter now. "I'm asking. You've got a choice. But if you're willing... I need you."
Tendi's face flushed even deeper as T'Ana's words sank in. She had always admired the doctor, of course—her gruff exterior, her no-nonsense approach to everything. But beneath that, there had always been something... more. Tendi hadn't dared acknowledge it until now.
"I... I do want to help you," Tendi admitted softly, her voice almost trembling. "But are you sure this is what you want?"
T'Ana's eyes softened, her tail flicking behind her in a more controlled, thoughtful manner. "If I wasn't sure, I wouldn't have asked," she replied, her tone more gentle than Tendi had ever heard from her. "I'm trusting you. And I'm giving you the choice to say no."
