Do you believe in curses?
My tragedy spawned from a single childish mistake. It started when I was still only a toddler.

My father was the mayor of a small rural town in Alvarez. Unlike most of the country, my father was completely against magic. He believed that mages who depend solely on their magic are not worthy to breath the same air as those who work toward a goal with their own two hands. That is why he immediately rejected my existence when I showed an interest in magic. I was only a grade schooler but my love for magic drove me to secretly study it.
That was the case until I came across an ancient book that told about a lost magic capable of mass memory manipulation.
My father was the mayor so he was capable of forcing his beliefs onto the citizens and banishing all mages. I learned the lost magic and attempted to change the entire town's memories so that they would accept magic into their everyday life.
That was my biggest mistake.
I was inexperienced and foolish. I messed up the spell and it resulted in everyone forgetting who I was. I tried to convince my parents of what happened but when I tried to explain, my father was enraged that I attempted magic. I was banished and began wandering from town to town. I thought that my tragedy ended with everyone forgetting who I was only once, but that thought was all too naive.
After a long period of time, I returned to my town in hopes that someone would remember me but my effort was in vain. I stayed the night at an inn and when I awoke the next morning, the innkeeper had forgotten all about me. This happened day after day, I would return to the same inn and no one would remember who I was.
That was when reality hit me. After midnight every day, all memories of my existence were erased.
I gave up on my hometown and resumed my wandering once again. That was when I met him. It was on a mid-spring morning when I arrived at a rural town called Gartania. The surrounding nature of the town was in full bloom but as I was on a stroll though the woods, the air suddenly became stagnant. I decided to investigate and I found a handsome young man napping at the base of a gigantic dead tree, the area around him lifeless. I knelt down to get a closer look when I was suddenly overwhelmed by the childish urged to poke his cheek. I did just that and accidentally woke him up. I giggled at his startled expression but he seem afraid to be near me. He quickly got up and tried to run away but I lunged forward and grabbed the base of his robes.
Due to my reflexive actions he fell flat on his face and fell unconscious. Flustered, I sat against the tree with his head in my lap, waiting for him to wake up. He regained consciousness sometime around noon and we introduced ourselves.
"I'm so sorry for tripping you earlier, my name is ______ ______. If you don't mind, may I ask for your name?"
"Zeref."
His voice was quiet and he looked really shy refusing to meet my pointed gaze. That's when I had a "brilliant" idea, "Zeref, as an apology for knocking you out, please let me treat you to lunch!" I bowed and mentally face palmed when I heard how desperate my voice sounded. Zeref on the other hand looked rather grim, "I'm sorry, but it's not safe to be around me... I'm cursed."
I shot him a questioning look but quickly smiled, "It's okay, I'm cursed too!"
His eyes widened in surprise but he said nothing. I smiled at him once again and offered, "How about this? If you let me treat you to lunch, I'll tell you about my "curse" and how I got it." He hesitated but nodded none the less.
He sat quietly watching me chatter on and on about myself and my adventures since I started wandering.
"Hey, Zeref?"
"Yes?"
"Thank you."
"What for?"
"Listening... I've never had this much fun talking to anyone... Ever."
For the first time that day, Zeref smiled, "It's fine, I enjoy listening to you, ______."
We then left the restaurant and went on a stroll through town, we visited a park and the market. We stopped to play with some children at an orphanage and I got to see a lot more smiles from Zeref.
That evening, we were once again strolling through the forest, "I plan to walk to the next town and find an inn there. Where will you be going Zeref?"
"I think I'll stay here."
I smiled at him and he smiled back, "I had a lot of fun today..."
"Yeah."
"But... I'm scared you won't remember me tomorrow morning."
I was on the brink of tears, the thought nearly shattered my heart. I didn't even feel this much despair when I lost my family. While avoiding his gaze, I feel a pair of strong arms wrap around my body. With his lips right up against my ear, he whispered, "I've been alive for a very long time, but what happened today is something that I swear I'll never forget." His words released the floodgates and I let the tears flow. I cried into his chest until I absolutely had to depart for the next town.
He waved me goodbye as I started on my way but barely a few feet down the road I turned around and ran up to Zeref, sealing our lips in a gentle kiss. He was surprised but accepted my affection nonetheless.

Since that day, I never heard from Zeref again. Although, I did hear that disaster hit the town I met him in a short while after I left. Even now, I still wander the hills of Alvarez, hoping that Zeref still remembers the joy I felt on that fateful day.
