The flames were the first thing she saw, their glow casting a harsh light across the chaos. Soldiers and officers, hung and left to burn, were displayed like trophies against the charred remains of what was once control. The scent of smoke mixed with something far more sickening, filling the air, clinging to her skin.

Around her, the crowd roared—a cacophony of voices cheering, shouting, a riotous celebration of a brutal victory. Mavie spun, wide-eyed, as the world crumbled around her, a terrible new order rising from the ashes. The buildings loomed, shattered and broken, and people surged through the streets, seizing what had once been held from them.

In a burst of fear, she turned to run, but it was too late—a pair of hands grabbed her, dragging her down, pinning her against the unforgiving pavement. The rough surface bit into her cheek as she struggled, but she could barely move, her breath coming in sharp gasps.

"Where are they?"
The voice was familiar, sharp and cold. Mavie's eyes flickered upward, and there she was—Kathleen, standing above her, face lit by the same firelight that scorched the city.

Silence filled the space between them, her defiance muted, a bitter acceptance settling over her. Kansas City was now free, seized by the people.

Only her family remained among the enemies.
