"We both know you're not worth it." Her glare making me look away.
"Come on Abree, if you told me maybe then I can tell my friends to back off,"
She sighs picking at her midnight purple nails, I watch her intently concentrating on her hazel eyes. I take the time to notice how dark her hair is, and how her skin looks pale. Her attitude may be feisty but with careful observation, you can tell she's masking years of sadness. Her eyes flicker up to mine, staring at me scanning my appearance. I shift around on the grass uncomfortable.
"Can we- can we do our scene now?" She mutters under her breath taking the packet from my lap.
"Sure." I run a hand through my hair waiting for her to choose a place to start.
"But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east and Juliet is the sun! Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, who is already sick and pale with grief." She stops handing me the packet to choose a different scene.
I clear my throat before scooting over next to Abree so she can read the next lines after mine.
"She speaks. O, speak again, bright angel, for thou art as glorious to this night, being o'er my head, as is a winged messenger of heaven. Unto the white-upturned wondering eyes of mortals that fall back to gaze on him. When he bestrides the lazy-puffing clouds and sails upon the bosom of the air." I quickly read off handing her the packet.
"O Romeo! Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo!" She stops putting the packet on the patch of grass in front of her.
"Shakespeare made no sense." She groans leaning back and looking at the sky.
"You say I'm not worth it, you think you you know?" I say looking down at her.
"Yea your a jerk." She turns her head towards me hair falling over her eyes.
"Come on just tell me what's been going on, it's not like I'm oblivious to what goes on in the world." I pry.
"First you tell me what could be so extravagant that I wouldn't know."
"Okay for starters? I may seem like I have everything but I don't. My brothers both are in boarding schools, and my dad moved out last year. I only see him once a month and my mom is pressuring me to get a scholarship because she can't afford to send me go collage." She stares at me as if that wasn't bad.
"Okay, well Luke. My dad did give me this cut and he's always yelling at me and telling me I'm worthless I'm nothing. And you think your dad moving out was bad? Try not having a good father figure. Try having everybody at school make fun of you. So don't you dare complain about not having your dad at home."
I turn the bracelet on my wrist around my hand trying to look anywhere but at her directly. "Come on I need to pass this class."
We finish doing the scene and I offer to walk her home but she says she'll walk alone. I quickly make my way down my street waiting for the stoplight. A wet drop hits my head and I look up and see the rain starting to fall. I quickly think of Abree and how she was supposed to walk home. The minute the walk sun turns I make my slowly towards her house eyeing the sidewalks looking for her. I spot a dark figure hugging themselves on the side and I walk over.
"Hey." I call over the sound of the rain and she jumps startled by my presence.
She turns to me before continuing to walk. I take off my jacket and hold it above the both of us covering us just enough so we don't get our heads wet.
"Thanks." She squeaks scooting in the slightest bit to get warmer.
We make our way down the sidewalk my vans getting soaked and my body feeling like it's frozen. As we make it to the familiar Dead tree in her yard she turns to me squinting as rain starts to hit her.
She's about to say something but stops herself, and turns away rushing up to the door of her house. I watch carefully as her dad opens the door yelling and pointing towards my direction. He pushes her into the house. It takes all my will power not to go and punch the bastard.
I quickly make my way back to my house the rain soaking my already damp hair.
